back story: this is my first letter to a congressman so i need some input before i snail mail it off... ive heard hand letters are better than just shooting an email. are there any glaring omissions that you guys see? no dissenters please.
duly noted.... also 36million in 20yrs, but i bet itll be more. i've wanted to ask if they're "guests" who invited them? i also wanted to tell him that i would vote against him in the next election, but i figured i may get a response if i don't make threats. then again, maybe i will?
btw I can not agree less with your opinion, but I did read it without requiring "campaign contributions".
For the record guest workers actually help out social security because they pay into it from their wages. Since they don't live here, they don't retire here and don't draw on social security payments. Guest workers and illegal workers are huge benefits to the stability of our social security system.
I don't want to derail this thread but could you seen me an email explaining why because I'm confused by why this is a bad thing RC - good Letter Rocket River
[cynical]Having written many letters to my worthless POS congrassman, I regret to inform you that you will assuredly recieve a mere form letter in the mail in return. One that ignores your opinion and states (in a friendly tone, mind you) that the congressperson in question has no intention of listening to his/her constituents. The system is broke.[/cynical]
gotta disagree with ya here FB. maybe guest workers pay into the system...since they are legally on the books...but illegals DO NOT. they have no legal documents to be here...and as such are not in the system....ergo, by default they cannot be paying into it. as far as they argument that illegals do the jobs that americans wont do....this provides the perfect opportunity for those sucking on the welfare teat to do some real work to earn the charity...make it a law that you must work to receive welfare...all those jobs opened up by restricting illegals could be filled by folks who claim they cant get work and receive welfare. this is on of the issues where I dont agree with alot of Dems/libs...we need to devote our resources to taking care of actual americans instead of other countries people. americans first others afterwards.
It depends on how the illegals are employed. There are many that are on the books using false documentation or that weren't checked at time of employment. Those that are paid under the table they don't contribute. I agree. I have no problem helping American citizens first, and I am actually divided on the illegal question. I can see the argument from both sides. I think I wish there was a way to allow more immigration so that less people would actually be illegal. I also think that once children are born here in the U.S. their families should be granted citizenship, to ensure the children get all of the services they are entitled to. Currently we have legal children with illegal parents who are afraid to take stands for their children because they are scared of being sent away.
The real reason that immigration is now a white hot issue with conservatives has nothing to do with the stated reasons. Thus, addressing the stated reasons like in RC's letter to Cornyn is meaningless. But let's do it anyway My real question is this; under the plan, who will pay for the health care, social security, and the rising education costs for these “guest” workers, and their families? They pay for themselves, everytime they buy something at the store (sales tax), and everytime they pay rent (pay property taxes indirectly). Those with fake SS cards also pay all of the federal taxes but do not get a refund check at the end of the year and will not benefit from SS/Medicare when they retire. Those without fake SS cards are in an income bracket that usually gets all of their taxes back anyway (except for FICA). They also help the economy by lowering the costs on new homes, lawn care, fresh produce, etc. There of course is this whole rule of law issue but that is so pre-911 thinking.
as with most laws u have to look for the abuses from expectant mothers coming over to folx intentionally trying to have kids to stay here which increases the numbers here Rocket River
i agree that they pay in without taking out, but im talking more about once they're legalized under this "guest worker" program. they're going to be more of a drain if they're given these benefits. also, what about the havoc that is caused now but using the social services for free medical care? they show up at the county hospital, give a fake name, or their real one for that matter, receive care, and never pay back. its left for the tax payers. furthermore, i dont buy the comment that cheap wages are keeping costs on homes and lawn care down. paying illegals and day workers in cash even for minimum wage, but prices have still gone up, so its the home builders who are lining their pockets. thanks for the comments though, i'll post the reply letter when i get one. even if its a form letter.
Take out that reference to the unemployment and how it matches with the number of illegals. We don't want unemployment to go below current levels - that will lead to an inflexible labor market and ultimately to inflation. I thought I taught you that yesterday. Please pay attention. Leading off your letter with that statement will cause whoever's reading it to immediately discount whatever follows it because you've already shown ignorance. I'd probably nix the silly tangent of the party of small government, also. The rest of it seems ok.
yes, you mentioned it yesterday, i'm not sure i grasp the concept though. any links or other materials you could point me to? as far as small government goes, they claim small government and fiscal responsibility. it sure doesn't look that way to me, with the way the president is spending though.
Go ahead on if you want but texxx is a Bush man and he doesn't even grasp the tenets of the party he belongs to. However the party changes under Bush, he'll defend it -- and act like anything that came before was stupid or never happened. See: above. The GOP was massively into small gov't and fiscal responsibility for, like, forever. First they were into that when they were out of power and they argued madly for it. Then they got into power and tried to institute those ideals through supply side economics (or "voodoo economics" in the first Bush's words before he joined the Reagan team and before his son went all in on the exact same voodoo). That failed miserably, which is around the time they started saying the president has nothing to do with the economy. But they still kept arguing small gov't and fiscal responsibility -- in fact, those are the key things my dad cites when he says why he's a lifelong Republican, though he seems to be slipping on his commitment to the party for the exact same reasons. Don't let texxx fool you. The issues you cited are core GOP issues. But texxx isn't a Republican anymore. He's a Bush booster. And Bush has changed the Republican party maybe more than any president's changed any party ever. (It's no wonder regular Americans are quitting the Republican party in droves and that lifelong Repubicans are tearing the Bush admin apart daily.) The core values of the party apparently don't matter anymore. And, in fact, Bush boosters will even mock you for bringing those core values up (texxx plays his part to perfection). As it turns out, incredibly, the Democratic Party is now more interested in small government and fiscal responsibility than the GOP. I couldn't have seen that coming. I'm a Democrat and we used to focus on other issues, but the modern GOP under Bush has been so obsessed with a power grab for the Executive branch that they now love big government and they've been so obsessed with rewarding their wealthy donors that they no longer give a **** about the ways in which future generations might pay for kickbacks to them. The GOP used to say Dems liked to "tax and spend." They've backed off on that line under Bush. It doesn't work that well when the GOP prez likes to "not tax and spend." Fiscal conservatism? **** that. Let's just print more money! Bottom line: if you like those guys personally, if it's just a horserace game for you, if you just like Bush and the rest better, stick with the GOP. If you actually care about traditional GOP issues, you're better off voting Democrat. Insane -- hilarious even -- but true. The GOP has abandoned all of their core principles in favor of supporting Bush's weird take from the poor, give to the rich/evangelical (outlaw abortion and homosexuality) crusade. texxx loves Bush so he agrees with every single thing he says, even to the point of mocking traditional GOP core values as ridiculous. You'll have to decide for yourself whether you're a small gov't/fiscal responsibility guy or a Bushbot. If you're like texxx, you'll abandon GOP principles because you just love Bush. If you're an actual Republican, you'll learn to vote Democrat. It's weird, but that's how it is.
p.s. to rodrick: I think your take on immigration is insanely wrongheaded, but since you started the thread (in a debate forum) by saying "no dissenters" I didn't say why. Come to think of it, that fits in perfectly with the New GOP Revue. p.s. to texxx and the regular hatas: yeah, I'm drunk. It's my ****ing birthday. Any chance you might mark the occasion by arguing the merits of this or any other argument for the very first time instead of attacking the drunk messenger? Just once so you could prove you're smarter than, say, a drunk guy? No? Okay, then.
Happy b-day Beejster! I'm glad to hear that you've been able to celebrate with a little irresponsible drinking. Even better yet, I have to admit that I'm proud of you. Your drunk posts have become higher quality of late. I notice that you're using a spell checker on your work, and also that you've made the effort to at least "star-out" the curse words - or is the profanity filter on the bbs doing that for you? Maybe I'm giving you too much credit. Regardless, I do hope you have a jolly day!
Rodrick; I don't agree with you on this issue but won't derail the thread further since I address the exact points you raise in the 500,000 people rally thread. That said I applaud you for writing to your congressman. Very likely you will get a form letter back, possibly on some unrelated issue, and be put on Cornyn's campaign mail list. That's what's happened to me when I've written to my Congressmen. At the same time though its good as a citizen you're taking time to contact your Congressman to express your opinion rather than just b****ing about things on an issue board. I also agree that snail mail is better than email and from what I've heard from people who've worked for legislators one real letter is worth a 100 emails. Not to discourage emails though but if you do right an email right a personal one rather than using one of the form one that Moveon.org or other groups send out. Staffers learn to spot those pretty quick and pay less head to them than a personalized message.
