What the heck can I do to stop my dog from digging insane holes in the yard? It's seriously a foot deep. I keep filling it back up, but it's getting tiresome. Advice?

Do you give the dog some exercise? He may be digging up to release some pent up energy.

Put concrete in the bottom of the hole.

Not everyday. She chokes herself to death when we do take her for walks. People tell us she's insane because she's part rat terrier. I kind of think she digs the holes to stay cooler, but I put a swimming pool out there for her & bring her inside during the hottest times of the day like 1 or 2 until 4 or 5.

Of course she digs; she's a terrier. Don't you know what those were bred for?

All you have to do to stop it, is to take some of the dog poop, and when you fill the hole back up, place it just below the surface of the hole.

They really hate getting crap on their feet, and after a while they will stop digging.

Not the best picture. This is when we first got her, she's already bigger. Her name is Lola (the devil dog).

one thing i've heard works good is to throw their crap in the holes they dig and they wont dig there anymore.

EDIT: oops, forgot to read all the posts......i guess that just means that it really works

Just to let the OP know, I have the same exact problem. Only thing is, my dog is a 100lb yellow lab. She digs wholes big enough to bury a body. When I walk her, she chokes herself, and basically just drags me down the block. She is 5 years old, and I had her since she was a puppy. I probably have spend over $1000 dollars fixing holes, boards in the fence, and it doesnt stop. She tears up any and everything I do in the backyard. I have finally came to terms with it, and just let her do her thing. In the heat of the summer, they are going to dig no matter what. They like the cool feeling of the dirt. When it cools down, I fix the holes, and boom, next summer she does it again. Here are some suggestions that were told to me, but have yet to stop my 100lb beast from digging.

Pour this in the holes, andon top after you fill.
    - chilli powder
    - bleach (yeah, this wil kill the grass, so go light)
    - lemon pepper
    - amonia

More specifically, terriers dig to hunt animals that live in underground burrows.

Of course, that won't help you get the dog to stop.

Have you tried a harness for her? We've got a german shepherd/retriever/etc mix... about a medium size dog and she would scare people half to death with her "playful" choking noises on walks, lol. Ever since, we've used a harness and it is out-standing. We can control her way way better and she doesn't make those awful choking noises anymore since the harness tugs on her chest and not like her leash did on her collar.

I've worked at an animal shelter and a dog boarding facility, and let me say...I wish all dogs had that preference. Half of them treated their own poop like it was Play-Doh :(
