Yes, the Prince Climbed Right Back On

The three expressed no jitters about what awaited them on the island: they were the mounts that Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, would be riding in an exhibition polo match late that afternoon.

The island, an old military base, had been transformed for the day into what could have been a satellite of the Hamptons. White tents and orange parasols from the charity event’s sponsor, the champagne maker Veuve Clicquot, dotted the sidelines of the manicured pitch as makeup melted under extravagant sun hats and shoulders burned in the heavy heat.

One side of the field was free and open to the public. On the other side was a ticketed section and a V.I.P. tent, where celebrities like the music mogul Russell Simmons and the model Alek Wek and others drank and dined in the shade.

The three top horses — two mares and a gelding — as well as two reserves, were selected from the stock at White Birch Farm in Greenwich, Conn., for their royal rider, Pablo Calandroni, 40, their groom for the day, said.

“They’re like little Ferraris,” he said.

Despite the careful casting, moments after the 3 p.m. match began, the unthinkable happened: the horse stopped short, Prince Harry did not, and he fell off.

But the prince, who was riding for the Black Rock team, sprang back on immediately and went on to score some goals, one at a “technically difficult,” speed and angle in the expert opinion of Tony Coppola, the announcer for the match.

The winner, however — by 6-5 in overtime — was the opposing Black Watch team, led by the model and polo star Nacho Figueras.

At the V.I.P. tent, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and his companion, Diana L. Taylor, watched the sweating horses thunder across the field. His daughter Georgina is a well-known equestrian, and the mayor said he came to the event to support the city and because she asked.

“The only shows I go to are ones that George rides in,” he said. “I always hold my breath at the last jump; it helps her go over.”

Ms. Bloomberg, just after Prince Harry had dusted himself off and remounted, said: “Everyone thinks it’s glamorous, but people don’t understand that you do fall off a lot.”
