I turned 41 recently and it feels like in the past few months doing everything physical has become a lot harder. For example I've been trying to get back into running after a few months layoffs and when just two years ago I could run 5.5 miles no problem I'm having a hard time running even 4 miles consistently. About a year ago I could do 90 pushups at once without a problem but this morning struggled to do 50. I've noticed my body declining for the last 10 years or so, hastened by injuries, but it seems like in the last few months things have really started to drop off.

For those Clutchfans out there in your 40's and beyonds did any of you notice a drop off like this?

You are really setting yourself up to be Rick Rolled with testosterone replacement ads.

True. One of my ex-GF who was older than me used to blame a lot of problems she was going through as early menopause. This was when she was in her early 40's.

Don't get discouraged. It sounds like you just took some time off and are having trouble getting back into the swing of things.

If you could do it a year ago there's no reason why you couldn't be doing it again soon, unless you've sustained some kind of major injury in this past year. Keep on keepin' on

100 pushups and 5.5 miles is a pretty good level of fitness. It's not like you should be able to just dive right back into that immediately...it takes time

D'oH! Thanks for the warning. I already get a lot of spam for viagra so I guess I should be prepared for the testosterone replacement spam.

Thanks. The running has more to do with that I don't run in winter, not easy to do in sub freezing temps and I hate running on treadmills, so I take the winter off. Usually though it takes me about a week to get back to form but this year it just seem a lot harder than it usually does.

I try to keep in shape otherwise throughout the year so I've been doing pushups and other calisthenics year round it just seems like its much harder in the last few months.

Hmm...let's see. i turn 33 this year. i have never had a serious injury until last year. Last year i tore my rotator cuff. 4 months ago i developed swelling in my right knee and it hasn't gone away. then 2 weeks ago, i tore my acl in my left knee. if that's not a sign that my body's breaking down, then i don't know what is. i can never play basketball like i want to ever again. all the muscles in my legs have turned to fat. and i can't bend my knees without pain. quite depressing.

Sishir, I'm 42 and right around 40 I was having a lot of physical problems. I've played Ultimate pretty competively for almost 10 years. This means playing 2 to 3 times a week in organized leagues and pick up in the summer and playing at least once a week the rest of the year with 2 day tournaments thrown in through out the year.

So, about 3 years ago I found that I was experiencing a lot more nagging injuries (achilles pulls, calf pulls etc.) and I just generally ached (backs and joints) all the time. I also felt like I never really got into cardiovascular shape.

Then about 2 years ago, I dropped around 15-20 pounds through a change in diet (185-170) and I've found that most of these issues have gone away. I haven't had a nagging injury in a long time and my general achiness is much less, plus my cardiovascular fitness has increased and I feel like I've gotten a step back in speed.

Go to your doctor. I don't think that's normal.

At the moment my overall health feels OK and given the costs of co-pays I'm trying to avoid going to the doctor but am planning in September to get a complete physical and a whole battery of tests.

That is some good advice and am thinking about getting some more protein in my diet. My weight is still pretty good. I weighed myself the other day and I am at 165 which is about 5 lbs heavier than I normally have been the past few years.

I good friend of mine, about 15 years older than you, wasn't feeling his normal energy level and his doctor had his thyroid level checked. Apparently, that gizmo can go off its feed with age and not produce whatever it produces in the same quantity. He was given a little pill to take once or twice a day and it made a big difference. He feels much more like "himself" now. Quite possible your thyroid is groovy and dancin', Sishir, but getting it checked when you have everything else checked might be a good idea.

    Good luck!

(does this mean that Sam could beat you up now??)
