Has anyone else ever noticed how often the expression "mute point" pops up in BBS discussions? Now, I'll grant you, I sometimes wish certain points were mute. I don't want to hear them. What I do find interesting is that some of the people who talk about "mute" points go on to describe moot points. I wonder why. I'm just having a little fun here. I can misspell with the best of them, so I'm living in that proverbial glass house at the moment.
Another one I like is the way people talk about "loosing" their virginity or some such phenomenon. I think, actually, that you would "loose" your libido instead!
I'm not so sure it's as simple as a misspelling. I think this may one of those cases where people hear the phrase a lot but don't see it written often enough to understand what the phrase is truly saying.
That's another one that drives me up the wall. I'd be willing to bet that if you called somebody on it, they would defend their spelling and claim that's the correct usage.
This whole "mute" vs. "moot" thing annoys me so much. I hear it all the time... even at work. If you don't know the word or are unsure how to use it, then don't use it!!!
Its wierd that you mention this, but I think its a mute point anyway. Your just not lose enough, you looser.
The one that bothers me is when people use "could of" instead of "could've." I guess it is because the two expressions are so phonetically similar. People hear "could've", "should've" & "would've" in conversation and actually think it's "could of", "would of" & "should of." That's probably my biggest grammatical pet peeve.
Funny, keeley. I just think that people are stupid and language is butchered more than promiscuous teenage girls in horror flicks. I am smarter then you. I am going to try and prove it.
How weird. All the 'mute's had me wondering if my using 'moot' was proper. I just came back from dictionary.com (which allayed my fears) to find this thread!
I am the number one mute point offender. Its not a mispelling, just that I thought that was how moot, irrelevant, was spelled. It never occured to me that is how mute, unable to speak, is spelled. Irregardless, when in the future I accidentally or intentionally type "mute" point, me is trying to say the point is irrelevant or moot. Sorry for disturbing the Spelling and Grammar Gestapo. As punishment... I will not use mute point. I will not use mute point. I will not use mute point. I will not use mute point. I will not use mute point. I will not use mute point. I will not use mute point. I will not use mute point. I will not use mute point. I will not use mute point. I will not eat green eggs and ham. I will not use mute point. I actually think I like "mute" point now that has been brought up in that it says a point is irrelevant to the discussion and shouldn't be talked about unless its relevance can be established. Plus, I get to annoy members of the SGG.
You thought I was making fun off the pedants. I was'nt. I was joining in with them. Your right though. I am a looser.
Lot's of these annoy me too. How about improper use of apostrophe's. There are times I think that nobody understand's how to use these correctly...
And you could tell that by me stating it was funny? Again, they were separate points and not meant to be read as one. Sorry, I should have put "in general" or "all" or something after my first line.
