Just got finished with "Awakenings, and I thought this thread might be fun and interesting, since I love hearing about great movies.

Sidenote---Please do not include "artsy-fartsy" movies that a lot of y'all put up here occasionally, just because it makes you feel superior and somehoe classier. (you know who you are.) Those threads have been done, and I don't like crap.

Here are a couple of mine.

    1) Awakenings, obviously
    2) Frailty.... This movie was far and away better than I was expecting.
    3) A Fish Called Wanda.... Funny as hell
    4) UHF.... Much funnier than 99% of comedies out there.

    Anyway, what are y'alls thoughts/suggestions?

I second The Game and Donnie Darko.
I'd also like to add Barton Fink, Requiem for a Dream and Bulworth.

Oh yeah, and there is a Korean comedy I watched not too long ago that had me rolling on the ground, despite having to read subtitles. I can only imagine how funny it must be to native speakers of the language.

    Attack the Gas Station

Yeah, Fatty FatBastard can't take half of those suggestions, because they're "artsy fartsy".

I wouldn't say these are "Must-Sees" , but they are just pretty decent movies amid a state of obscurity:

    "They Live"
    "Black Mask"
    "Replacement KillerS"
    "Osmosis Jones"
    "Escape from New York"
    "The Air Up There"

    That is a good one.

I'd also like to add Barton Fink

Another great one. I love Turturro anyway, but he was masterful in this one, as was John Goodman and Tony Shalhoub.

And this exchange is one of the funniest in movie history:

    (Questioning Fink about Mundt)
    Detective Deutsch: What else?
Barton: He said he liked Jack Oakie pictures.
Detective Mastrionotti: You know, Fink, ordinarily we say anything you might remember could be helpful. But I'll be frank with you, Fink: that was not helpful.
Detective Deutsch: You notice he's not writing it down.

When I first saw the movie, the scene towards the end when Muntz finally goes nuts and sets everything on fire was one of the creepiest I have seen in a while. Goodman just looked evil...kind of emitting that insane vibe. Even though I knew it wasn't that kind of movie, and certainly didn't seem to be on the necessary budget to perform the appropriate special effects, when he said, "Sometimes it gets so hot, I just want to crawl right out of my skin" I half expected his skeleton to just start tearing through his skin. I loved that scene.

If you see this, you HAVE to see the sort-of-sequel, Fierce Creatures. Freaking hilarious. (The original cast is in it, but they play different characters.)

One movie that EVERYONE needs to see is PCU. Run, don't walk, to your nearest video store and rent it. Jeremy Piven + Jon Favreau + David Spade + Megan Ward + George Clinton (the musician) = Absoute college classic.

DROZ: "What is this? You're going to wear the shirt of the band you're going to see? Don't be that guy..."

Another great movie I'd suggest is About a Boy. Hugh Grant (whom I normally loathe) plays a semi-******* in this one (and he's very good at it), and the movie itself was probably one of the best movies in 2002.

I know it's a movie classic, but there are actually people on this planet who have NOT seen Clerks. Public service announcement: Do us all a favor and watch it. Then, we I turn to you and say, "Hey! Try not to suck any dick on the way to the parking lot," you'll actually know what I'm talking about. While you're at it, you might as well check out Mallrats. Brodie is a god. (Plus, if you listen to the commentary on DVD, you get to hear a very drunk Jason Mewes act like a buffoon and eventually pass out half-way through the film...)

Without trying to sound like my old English teacher, in the case of "About A Boy", read the book....its much better than the movie. Totally different ending. Although the movie is good.

I have to second "Fraility". Damn that was a surprise.

I'd second Frailty. Awesome movie, it was Bill Paxton's directorial debut.

I've been wanting to see Barton Fink and Miller's Crossing - I've been trying to see all of the Cohen brothers films. Recently I've watched Fargo and Raising Arizona. They really favor Goodman, Clooney and Turturro, I can't blame them. :)

    my picks:

O Brother, Where Art Thou? - Very good and funny.
    The Pianist - wow....
    Band of Brothers - incredible
True Romance - Hopper, Pitt, Oldman, Slater ;)
Monster's Ball - I think most people overlook this movie.

Have to agree on Barton Fink. Its a bit artsy but its really damn good. Here are some others

Chinatown - Might have been popular when it was released but most of my friends havnt heard of it.

Das Boot - Very intense WWII submarine movie. You have to read subtitles but its not an artsy movie at all.

Blood Simple - Cohen Brothers first movie but stilll very good.

Blade Runner - same response as Chinatown with my friends.

Seven Samurai - This likely violates Fatty's rule (Japanies subs), but its one of the best movies ever made.

Also like to add "Sleepers" which I just purchased. I thought this was a great movie.
