Maybe it's just me or my changing taste, but isn't a weird when some new artist comes along and their first release is by far way there best. Often it seems liek the success and money made on the first release mean they change directions or over produce their subsequent releases, often destroying that original sound you loved. It's not like they are one-hit wonders, but damn there first Cd are their best, here's some who for me fall in this category

Alanis Morrisette - she really should have stopped after jagged little pill, aside from playing god in Dogma has she done anything good since then

Green Day - big call and maybe a tad harsh, the later releases all have some good songs on them, but also a mix of duds, Dookie is by far and way their best, it is the total album, flows so well and every track is great.

Sheryl Crow - Tuesday Night Music Club was amazingly fresh and catchy, since then it seems like everything else is an attempt to prodice music the same but with that over prodiced sound that doesn't work.

Counting Crows - actually still sort of like most of their stuff, but August and Everything After is by far and way their best, again had the fresh, raw, catchy sound and now just little less of that.

Lisa Loeb - man she burst onto the scene with Stay on the Reality bites soundtrack and i really loved her first release Tails, maybe my tastes have changed but anything since just seems like a poor imitation.

Cold Play - hard to say after only 2 cds, but i am guessing it will be real tough to top

SilverChair - Frogstomp was super, everything since doesn't come anywhere close.

Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction.

Not really my kind of music, but a great album. To me, everything after that was very patchy.

When an album is as good as Dookie, it really isn't harsh.

Technically, "Jagged Little Pill" wasn't the first album by Alanis. She did a bunch of cheesy dance music back when she was younger.

New Radicals, whatever the name of their album was. I think they only made one, but I thought it was pretty good.

damn you GB...that was who popped into my head when I read the title..
Guns and Roses is by far the best band that sucked horribly on every album afterwards.

Actually, this would apply to half of the bands that came out in the 80's. One good album, and bam...they suck..

Aldo Nova---Had a hit with "Fantasy"...then disappears, never to be heard from again..actually, he put out another album or two..totally forgettable.
Autograph---same here.."Sign In Please" generated the hit "Turn Up the Radio"...and then...see ya..
Ratt---some may argue that Ratt still had good stuff after "Out of the Cellar"...but it wasnt near as good as the first album..
Keel---the arena-rock anthem..."The Right To Rock"...was a great song...but they suffered the same fate as most of the other pretenders that got lucky with one hit song..their second album makes you think that someone else wrote all the stuff on their first album..
Slaughter---Stick It to Ya...they had 2 hits off of this one, "Fly To the Angels" and "Up All Night". The rest of the album was decent...
Fastway---this is a band that had great promise. UFO's Pete Way on bass, and Motorhead's "Fast" Eddie Clark on guitar put out some really good bluesy hard rock, but after Pete Way left.. they just kind of fell apart..they tried to make a comeback, but it just wasn't the same..sad.
Winger--- Don't say it, I know what you mean. but I can't deny that Reb beach had some really nice guitar work on their first album and Winger wasn't that bad of a bassist when he wasn't trying to hump his bass into oblivion... Thankfully, they gave up after only 2 more albums that should have never been released. Reb deserved soo much more than this..
Vixen----One album...thats it..even their obvious sex appeal couldn't rescue them from oblivion. Some reeally surprisingly good playin for a bunch of women..
Ugly Kid Joe----say it with me..."America's Least Wanted"..."Neighbor"...the infectious "Everything About You", and a really nice cover of Harry Chapin's "Cat's In the Cradle"...I really expected more from them after this record...another chapter in the rock-n-roll "I coulda been a contenda" storybook...

Just a few off the top of my head, Don't get me started on other bands that only had one good album in the middle of their careers..

First band that came to my mind when I read the thread subject.

"Cracked Rear View" is one of my alltime favorite albums.

Tricky - Maxinquaye - Never managed to sound this musical again.

Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction - an awesome rock album that probably could never have been duplicated by anyone, let alone a bunch of headcases and junkies.

BTW, Green Day issued at least 2 albums before Dookie.

The counting crows first cd is by far my favorite of the 4, but they've grown a lot musically since then. I feel like the band is better, but what made the first cd so special is that it did seem so stripped down, focused on the emotion and lyrics.

And yeah, Dookie definitely wasn't Green Day's first album.

Damn, been a long time since I heard anyone mention Fastway. I saw them open for Def Lepard and thought they were better than Def Lepard (Pyromania tour). I may have to pull that album out now and give it a listen. Thanks 2k.:)

    On the thread subject:

    The Cars
    Nirvana
Bad Company (although their comeback album "Holy Water" is awesome)
    Night Ranger
    Badfinger
    Shuggie Otis
    The Knack

I'll agree with the Alannis Morrisette. Everything since that first album has been crap.
