Listening to some old-time soul (well at least old-time to me as it is in the '70s) in Curtis Mayfield, Al Green, Barry White, and Isaac Hayes. Now, I am asking out of those 4, who do people here think was the best, not your favorite. Also, I understand that there have been other soul artists like Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, etc. That's great if you think the 4 people I am making you choose from aren't the greatest soul artists ever. I just want to know who you would go with in the 4 I am listing.
I picked Issac Hayes. But when you are talking about Soul, no one comes close to Percy Sledge. The guy is SOUL
Even though the song itself is showtunes good*, the vocals for Theme from Shaft seem a bit corny. And Al Green sounds like family barbecue music. Barry White's music is solid, but he seems like a caricature; possibly because he was a little more sober and/or accessible than other '70s artists. Ultimately I think I have to give it Mayfield. *How is it that a Shaft musical has not yet been made?
See I would go with Marvin Gaye but he is not an option. I am leaning towards Al Green but honestly his background stuff isn't as "thrilling" (don't know any other word to use) than that of the other 3. I mean Barry White's "Never Never Gonna Give Ya Up" (which I am listening to right now) is a smokin' jam, IMO, mainly because of that scratchy noise that is constant in the song and what sounds like a harpischord in the background as well.

Sam Cooke is the greatest but out of your 4 I'll go with. 1. Al Green 2. Barry White 3. Isaac Hayes 4. Curtis Mayfield
it's a "fascinating, fascinating" question to me since I'm barely started seriously listening to soul music and these artist are really the only ones i know besides otis redding and marvin gaye. But out of the options I choose: Issac Hayes. because hot buttered soul and the issac hayes movement are so moving.
Of the 4 you listed, I'll go with Al Green. But to me this category is Stevie Wonder first and then the rest second.
For groups: i gotta go with the staple singers. Come on go wiiiiiiith me! <iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/HanwLunJau0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

No love for Barry White? I went ahead and voted Isaac Hayes as someone else said earlier in this thread, "Hot Buttered Soul" is a great, great record.
