So I have been listening to a lot of new music lately and today I listened to the first album each of Velvet Revolver and Audioslave. Both albums were very solid. Then I got to thinking about the groups that those 2 bands used to be comprised of - Guns N' Roses & Stone Temple Pilots (for Velvet Revolver) and Rage Against the Machine & Soundgarden (for Audioslave). I would venture that most people would say that G n R was the greatest of those 4 bands, but that is me just guessing. I am asking who did you like more, though. I respect G n R a lot more now than I used to but it is still hard for me to like them because of the assclownery that was W. Axyl Rose. If Scott Weiland had been their lead singer instead, then they probably would have been one of my all-time favorite groups. Rage is okay but they aren't someone I find myself wanting to listen to a lot. Soundgarden and STP would be the 2 I would lean to as STP's debut ("Core" which I am listening to now) is absolutely staggering in its power. Unfortunately, I don't think the rest of their albums were anywhere close to being as good as "Core", though. So, I am voting Soundgarden. I am also including in the poll the 2 supergroups Audioslave and Velvet Revolver just in case there are people who liked those groups more than the old groups.
Not exactly 'new' music. My vote was for Rage. Has held up the best over time. Soundgarden is awesome, too. GnR is fun to listen to, but doesn't have the wealth of albums that the first two had.
wow its a pretty tough choice for me between Rage and STP. I really like Zach DLR's lyrics in Rage and found them to be witty and actually have a message and meaning (despite what people may feel in terms of its political content) and I give him credit for that and Morello is just a freakin wizard on the guitar I went with STP because they just had more songs that I really like and they had a wider variety of sounds (felt Rage always had well a lot of 'rage' in their songs even their 'softer' ones) and STP has two of my favorite songs ever in Creep and Interstate Love Song
I thought about that after I posted the opening post. When I say "new", I am talking about music that is new to my hard drive/iPod not new music that just came out this year.
1. Soundgarden 2. Stone Temple Pilots 3. Rage Against the Machine 4. Guns 'n' Roses 5. Audioslave 6. Velvet Revolver Note: I rearranged the top 3 about seven times while writing this post.
Reliving old memories of blasting 107.5 the buzz when they played the crap out of interstate love song.
STP always got a bad rep for some reason. As if they were trying to cash in on Grunge. Always sounded like straight up God fearing hard rock to me... nowadays you don't see as many people whining about it.
+1. Morello's new project, Street Sweeper Social Scene, sucks ass. Sounds like a complete derivative of RATM and Audioslave. The biggest problem over the years is that he keeps using the same type of guitar riffs over and over and over again. Here's my list: 1.) STP 2.) Soundgarden 3.) GNR 4.) RATM 5.) Audioslave 6.) Velvet Revolver
The thing is that is only the first album "Core" that people may have a valid complaint about. They added a lot more poppy hooks and jangly guitar parts with each successive album. "Big Bang Baby", "Trippin on a Hole in a Paper Heart", "Vasoline", etc. etc. sound nothing like grunge.
1.) GNR 2.) STP 3.) Soundgarden 4.) RATM 5.) Velvet Revolver 6.) Audioslave All of these bands really only had two good albums, so to say that GNR doesn't have the volume is dumb. They also produced the most total albums. If you think GNR shouldn't be included, I'm guessing you're under 25. GNR - 9 albums Soundgarden -7 albums STP - 6 albums RATM 6 albums
Oops....hit submit too soon. If "Appetite" counts as 1 good album, and you had to pick either UYI 1 or 2, which would you pick? It's been so long, I don't even remember which one I like better.
I seem to remember taking STP for granted back then. However, looking back, I think their 2nd and 3rd albums were actually better than Core. Songs like "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart", "Big Bang Baby", "Seven Caged Tigers", "Interstate Love Song", "Vasoline" and "The Big Empty" were pretty dern solid efforts.
