Well, some of you may remember that last week I was asking about the Who. Now I would like to hear what people have to say about Queen. I only have 2 Queen CDs in "Greatest Hits" and "Classic Queen" (listening to "It's a Miracle" right now), but I cannot believe it has taken me all this time to fully appreciate this band's brilliance. I just love the range of Freddie Mercury (RIP), Brian May's HIGHLY underrated guitar playing, and the unreal harmonies of this band. Talking to one bigtime Queen fan VIA email, I was recommended to start with "A Night at the Opera", so I ordered it off Amazon a couple of days ago. He also told me that other great Queen albums for the newbie were "News of the World", "Sheer Heart Attack", and "The Game". Anyone else want to plug certain albums? Besides getting some insight on Queen, I also want to know what people's favorite songs by them are. I like pretty much every song that is on the 2 compilations that I have but 4 songs in particular: 1 - "Bicycle Race" 2 - "Who Wants to Live Forever" (one of the most chilling songs I have ever heard) 3 - "I Want It All" 4 - "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" (love the guitar in it - great rockabilly tribute!)
i also like Quenn's music alot. my favorite songs are: 1 Don't stop me now 2 Breakthru 3 Who want to live forever 4 the show must go on. 5 bohemian rhapsody IMHO bohemian rhapsody is the best song ever written. Mercury is a great singer, and Brian May is a great gittar player, For a newby i recommend greatest hits 1 and 2.
I'm sorry, but I don't know much of anything about Queen besides the songs everyone knows. I've never really thought of seeing what else they had, but I'll to go preview their songs on iTunes and presumably proceed to download some stuff. Anyways... 1. Bohemian Rhapsody - Is there any other song like it? Not that I can think of, so this song is definitely a true classic. 2. We Will Rock You - Some might think if you say this at number two then you really don't appreciate the goodness that is Queen. While, that may be true, this song is played in every stadium at one point or another and can really get you going. Music should make you happy, so I'll insert this here. 3. We Are The Champions - Haha, well it always comes right after We Will Rock You and it's just a really cool song, I think. 4. Another One Bites The Dust - Good stuff. You can't help but like the guitars in this one. 5. Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Another catchy song by them, cool song.
Bohemian Rhapsody is my favorite song of all time. I try to listen to it at least once a day. If I had to rate bands, Queen would definately rate in my top 3.
Mercury was amazing, such a great lead singer, my fav Queen songs would be: 1. Bohemian Rhapsody 2.Fat Bottmed Girls 3.Under Pressure (does that count?) 4.You're My Best Friend 5.Crazy Little Thing Called Love
There is a song on "A Night at the Opera" called "A Prophets Song" that I really like --- sort of Bohemian Rhapsodyish
Queen is my favorite rock band. I play Brian May's Guild guitar, and they were the reason I started playing guitar in the first place. They were a brilliant, brilliant band and if you can look past some of the cheesiness, you'll be rewarded with some great music. My favorite album is their second one, which is easily their heaviest. Side one is all May/Roger Taylor songs, while side two is all Freddie. Just an over the top masterpiece. Starting with "Sheer Heart Attack" and through "The Game," the band essentially tried the kitchen sink approach, where a skiffle song would follow a music hall which would follow a metal anthem. Because the influences were so disparate and the styles so varied, it's hard to pick a particular album to jump on. Just start with the 70s and try to branch out. Even genre excercises like "Flash" have plenty of great songs on them ("The Hero" will rock your balls off). But, I'm also a freak. I dropped ninety bucks on a six-song "Smile" album about seven years ago, Smile being the band May and Taylor were in before Queen. There is a reason these guys used to play in front of 100,000 people. They were that good.
By the way, I once saw them (minus Freddie Mercury, of course) in a bar in Palma de Mallorca, apparently with their wives. They were sitting at the table next to mine.
Not much to add, but I've got to give a shout out to the song freddie did with David Bowie. Under Pressure was a great song!
And good for him. I've met lots of music fans, but rarely have I met anyone one with as much of a passion for and understanding of music as Manny, particularly given that he isn't a musician. His knowledge is really, really impressive, particularly of something like jazz which he's only been listening to for a couple years I think. It's people like Manny that keep guys like me making music. Too often, musicians forget that music plays a pivotal role in the lives of non-musicians. We forget to respect our craft and give 100% every time because the priveledge of doing what we do can be lost on us. Personally, I wish there were more music lovers like Manny - people who genuinely cared enough about the music to not only talk about it, but learn about it.
I was never a huge Queen fan...but I saw the show "We Will Rock You" in London and I thought it was pretty good (just in case any of you fans are over there and have a chance to see it)
Apparently not a favorite here, but I liked "Find Me Somebody to Love" a lot too. Talking about Queen reminds me of Meatloaf, who also had some good songs that you really don't hear the like of these days.
An early Rolling Stone review of Meatloaf called him "an unholy combination of Freddie Mercury and Bruce Springsteen."
Good God, Fatty. You sure enjoy being an *******. Thanks Jeff for the kind words. My only regret is that I am not a musician, maybe one day I will take up piano, LOL. But I figure I can do the next best thing and listen with my undivided attention and learn as much as I can as a "non-musician".
To Manny, Jeff, et. al. I'm just giving you a razzing!!!! Goodness! I was a professional singer for close to five years. (Note to self... sometimes the written word can seem abrasive)
