I've been listening a lot lately to 2 of the greatest post-punk bands in the last couple of days in The Cure and The Smiths. These 2 bands influenced so many groups - Interpol, Bloc Party, Radiohead, The Sundays, The Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Coldplay, The Killers, The Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, The Stone Roses, and many others. So, who was the better band - The Cure or The Smiths? Robert Smith (Cure) or Morrissey/Marr (The Smiths)? Only 2 choices for this poll and if you hate both bands, then you don't have to post in the thread.

It is hard for me to choose. The Cure could easily get it as they have had, by far, the longer career (their next studio album is due out sometime next year) while The Smiths were only around from '82 to '87. Yet The Cure's albums got somewhat mediocre after "Wish" although each album afterwards had several brilliant moments ("Strange Attraction", "Out of This World", "Before Three", etc.). I don't know if The Smiths ever released a bad song. I am going to go ahead and vote for The Smiths although it was extremely hard to do so.
Right now I'll give it to The Smiths. Over the last year I've been listening to all their stuff and I can't believe I never listened to them in high school. Back then it was The Cure. I know I'll go through my Cure phase again and start playing Staring At The Sea a hundred times, but for now it's the Smiths. Hatful Of Hollow> The Queen Is Dead > The Smiths
The Cure, no doubt. The Smith's had their time, and came and went. But the Cure had some really memorable songs. In fact, Disintegration is an amazing album even today. Some of my favorite songs from the The Cure: Pictures of You Fascination Street Lullaby Lovesong Just Like Heaven Close to Me Friday I'm In Love
I can guarantee you I'm the biggest Pixies/Frank Black fan on the board so I'm going to concentrate on the question Manny posted. I saw both bands way back when and they both are great and put on a great show. The cure always seemed to me to be more of a "band" where the Smiths seemed to be Morrisey and the band. Comparing cataloges I'd almost call it a draw because both have songs (and albums) that take me back to times, places and people from the past. Songs bring back strong memories and a bunch of the songs from both bands have that effect on me. I'd give the Cure a slight edge over all. I think I'll light some candles, put Disintegration on the stereo and mix my wife a drink. That album aways seems to work in my favor.
Uh, neither band is "emo" but then again I am not surprised you would think that, Fatty. BTW, I imported Morrissey's album, "Your Arsenal" to my iPod the other day and there's a song on it that he sang just for you - "You're the One for Me, Fatty". You should take a listen since he wrote it and went to all that trouble.
Say what you want, but when I was in high school, these were the two bands that all the "depressed" kids listened to. There was no "emo" at the time, but if there were, these would've been the bands. They suck. Depressing music sucks. Listen to Country if you want that ****.
Well considering that Genesis is my favorite band of all-time (just barely over Pink Floyd and this goes for both the Gabriel AND Collins era) and one of the guys down the hall at work has said the same thing, I can see why you would say that.
I like them both. They're different enough for one another that it's hard for to pick one over the other. Sometimes I'm in the mood for one, sometimes the other, and sometimes neither.
I'll take The Cure over The Smiths just because they had more poppier songs which I liked. I definitely would listen to those 2 bands over a faggy pretentious band like Duran Duran.
i have always been a bigger cure fan - kiss me and disintegrate are two of my all time favorite albums. and the smiths were great, but viva hate is better than anything they did.
They are both awesome ! I come to wish you an unhappy birthday, cause your evil and you lied. I may feel slightly sad but I won't cry. DD
