Four Winds by Bright Eyes is one of my all-time faves. Tracks 2-6 on Cassadaga rival any five-song stretch on an album for me.

yeah like 10 of the 20 bands listed are among my favorites.

and nobody thinks conor oberst's voice is great. as someone who TRIES (but fails miserably) to write poetry, i can only sit dumbfounded listening to the greatness of bright eyes lyrics...the passion he conveys in his words with such sharp precision. the clever metaphors, the steinbeck-like description, the brutal honesty. i used to find it unlistenable, now i adore it.

at least he didn't whine about of montreal.

There's a difference between liking music and liking pop culture. Most people who think they like music actually only like pop culture.

I would never call them the greatest, but I think they're pretty good. I imagine you would appreciate them more if people would just stop trying to call them a blues band.

I've met shook his hand told him great show several times at his live shows. My cousin has talked more with him-he's on a stalker level whereas i don't like to bug people. He's a funny chill guy. Maybe you're talking way back Bob, but he's been sober for a long time apparently and ever since i was about 18(now 28), he always seemed the same chill, non caring guy.

    Bad experience with him?

Ariel Pink definitely isn't for everyone. I do like "Before Today" but I admit a lot of his **** is really odd, drawn from esoteric 60s acid pop bands.

I can honestly say the only band names that are at all familiar to me on this list are Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie, MGMT. But I couldn't identify any of their songs and might only recognize MGMT because it reminds me of management classes I took in college.

I looked up "Four Winds by Bright Eyes" on youtube, the instrumental part sounded like a complete rip off of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". Is this intentional and do they give credit to "The Band" ? It's pretty unmistakable.

Nope! I don't think there's a band that has put out as much great music as The Keys since 2008. Brothers is a classic album.

I respect your opinion though, so who are some bands you think deserve the title?

I have apparently reached that age where I no longer care about new music and just listen to stuff I am comfortable with. Which officially makes me less cool than my mom.

I know about Death Cab for Cutie and Pomplamoose does those interesting covers....the rest of these bands I couldn't name 3 songs total.

Worse that is true of the Billboard Top 40. I remember thinking...wow what a cool sound, once while listening to a "new" band recently...turned out to be Train...which has been around almost a decade.

Some of the authors points are pretty stupid to me. Music is nothing if not cyclical. He might as well start another Zeppelin ripping off Willie Dixon debate... Still, it does at least point some of these mostly obscure bands out to others who would not know. Of the bands mentioned I like The Decemberists, Grizzly Bear, TV on the Radio and The Black Keys the best. A few I have heard of, but never heard. I could most do without Bon Iver and sometimes Bright Eyes.
