So I have been listening to quite a bit of Sonic Youth as of late (along with the Pixies and Dinosaur Jr) and I am wondering if there are any other SY fans here and what are you guys favorite albums and songs.

I like "Daydream Nation" the best but I really dig "Goo" a lot too. "EVOL", "Sister" are up there as well and I am probably one of the few that like "Bad Moon Rising". My favorite song without question is "Disappearer" (from "Goo") but I like a lot of the songs that Kim Gordon sings especially when she sings in that pissed off punk rocker chick voice. I don't know a lot about the more recent stuff but plan on listening to those albums in the next couple of days.

So let me hear thoughts about this very important band..

always liked Sonic Youth, but Dinosaur Jr has held up better for me.

Still throw in Greenmind frequently as well as Flying Sideways

I've been a solid Sonic Youth fan since the early '80s. I've probably seen them live more than any other national (non-Texan) touring act over the last 25+ years. I've always loved the unique, complex tunings over simple rhythms.
    Bummer about Thurston and Kim...

Big fan of all the above.

Daydream Nation is great. I like Sister quite a bit, Catholic Block, Stereo Sanctity, Tuff Gnarl, White Cross.... all good.. I use to listen to Goo and Dirty a lot but it's been a long time. Rather Ripped from 2006 is a pretty good album, really. I was surprised a little. Reena (Opening track) is a good one, but I like Incinerate, Jams Runs Free, and Turquoise Boy. Rats is ok too.

Love me some old Dinosaur Jr. Green Mind as well as Hey Where you Been. Tried some of Mascis' newer stuff, but just never hooked me since the older stuff, really. I probably haven't given it as fair a shake as I should.

Pixies would be my favorite of the bunch, though.

By the way, I've seen in the other music thread that you've been listening to these albums, and I've now tried to rep you for it several times but apparently I've repped you lately and haven't spread it around yet.

Slightly off-topic, but Butch Vig (who produced that album) was amazing at recording and mixing the guitars. Listen to the difference from the guitars on Goo->Dirty, and its as dramatic as going from mono->stereo. You can here the same on Gish->Siamese Dream for Smashing Pumpkins, as well as Bleach->Nevermind. If you listen to those albums one after the other, the difference is amazing. Lo-fi is great in certain applications, but it doesn't work for really thick, distorted electric guitars.

Well then spread your rep around! ;)

I'll have to check out Rather Ripped but what are your thoughts on "Sonic Nurse" and "Murray Street".

What did you think about Frank Black's "Teenager of the Year"?

Their recent stuff is really good too, I love Murray Street and Rather Ripped.

Daydream Naton and Sister are my favorites from the '80s. Goo and Dirty from the '90s.

EVOL (80's), Washing Machine (90's), and Sonic Nurse (00's) are good too but are a tier below IMHO.

Every album has some really good stuff (except for NYC Ghosts & Flowers, I think it's terrible).

i feel the opposite. i used to love dino jr, but i dont listen to them at all anymore while i still frequently listen to sonic youth, who i think are one of the greatest bands of all time...OF ALL TIME.

i got into them when goo came out and i was 15. i acknowledge that that one is not their best album, but it is my favorite and the one i listen to most. daydream nation is an easy "best" pick...so epic and massive. i think sister is almost as good too. one i have not seen mentioned yet is a thousand leaves - that is their "deadhead" record and its great...some tasty jams. wildflower soul is one of my favorite s.y. songs. and the whitey album, which they recorded under the name "ciccone youth".

anyone else at that show in 1992 at the unicorn w/ pavement and painteens? still one of the best concerts ive ever seen....when liberty lunch was closing down they came down to austin to play two nights there - that was right after all their equipment got stolen. austin music hall on the washing machine tour. several times at stubbs.

he was cheating on her, which i dont get at all.

i saw thurston moores new band, chelsea light moving, at the parish during sxsw...really good.

    jo,

I have been thinking about getting the album by Thurston's new band, the Chelsea Light Moving but haven't so far. What are your thoughts on that album?

Yes, RATHER RIPPED is awesome. Great band. Saw them on the Washing Machine tour.

Back in the day, 18 + minutes of "The Diamond Sea," & my homemade bong went hand in hand. lol

Too bad Thurston cheated on Kim, & now the future is up in the air.
