Nine Inch Nails: The First Open Source Band? (I thought one of you older, wiser, NIN fan dudes would have posted this before me.)

    Excerpt:
I can't believe it. To me, it sounds like "We've run out of creativity. Please help us."

"That said," I am downloading ONE video from Sacramento right now. 400 Gigs don't fit in my [that's what she said] hard drive. :(

I like what Trent is doing.

He gives away all of the music he has rights to on his site along with garageband files for all of his songs as well. So you can make your own mixes, sample his stuff, etc. He makes his money touring and merchandise. Obviously he is in a position to do that as he has a large, devoted following. The way he treats his fans is top-notch.

As opposed to someone like Prince who has taken the opposite approach with his music and his fans.

i don't see it as "please help us", by any means. It's actually nice to have someone open about their music.

I am beginning to believe that, too. But, nonetheless: couldn't he actually be working on something of his own, while the fans do, too? Wouldn't that be more open AND creative?

His most recent release was titled "This one's on me" and netted him over a million in its first week. And all of that goes straight to Reznor - none of it goes to record companies. So, Reznor gets the money, AND the record company doesn't have any control over Reznor's content. It's a beautiful thing.

This is what I've been saying for years. The RIAA and record companies should be changing their business models to adapt. Instead, they're keeping antiquated business models and trying to fight copying. Maybe that's why they're going down the toilet.

In the post you quoted it talks about the four part instrumental he released just last year.

In fact I think he's put something out since then I believe.

Not sure what you are getting at.

Thom Yorke of Radiohead not too long ago was quoted as saying something along the lines of "With the release of In Rainbows on the internet, they made more money on that one record than all of their others combined throughout their career." The fans didn't even have to pay for it. If you signed up on their site you could put in $0.00 and still download it, yet they banked. I believe even Trent paid something like $10,000.00 for the album.

    Eat the ballz, RIAA.

What are you talking about? He releases the tracks so people can remix them, they aren't writing music for him...

Rokkit, TesseracT, it's in my first post. I'm saying that they're losing the creative touch, and are looking for other people to do their videos, music, etc. I am not saying they've totally given up on doing things themselves. But I do like that they're releasing all that filming and music with which other people can "mess around." That's cool.

But why would you think that?

People do remixes/videos all the time. Difference is that NIN isn't threatening to sue them. Other than that, they are still putting out their own work. To assume they are losing their creative touch or asking for help from that doesn't make any sense.

I'm taking a guess and saying Swoly-D doesn't follow NIN that much.

    That's what she said.

:( Geezuz effin' mother of the cosmos. RELAX, people. I say something that seems like I'm being a meanie to your favorite band and ya'll think I'm freakin' crucifyin' their ass for everyone's sins. I like their idea. I think it's GREAT. F@Q)#(*&k.

It's because your confused. Your accusing him of having run out of creativity because he's set it up so that fans can remix his songs and share those remixes without any concerns about copyright problems. Somehow you think that means he's letting fans come up with new music for him.

If I know Swoly, he's reading that post thinking...

    "You're"

    It's "You're"

    not "your"

    "your" is posessive

"You're" is the abbreviation of "you are"

    It's totally different

    AGH!

He can do that because the record companies and their massive media and advertising budgets made him famous.
