I am looking to take music lessons and wanted to know what would be the best instrument to start with. I eventually want to learn to play the trumpet but for someone who has zero musical ability, i was wondering if it would be a good idea to start with this. If anyone has taken or taught lessons i would appreciate some feedback on this and around how much should i be paying?
Start with the instrument you want to play. All of them are difficult but you'll be better off if you start where you want to end up.
You know how to make a French Horn sound like a trombone? Take your hand out of the bell and play a lot of wrong notes...
Hey, do you know how to improve the aerodynamics of a drummer's car? Take off the pizza delivery sign...
That's cause you weren't cool enought to be a band geek in college like I was. You're a wannabe band geek... Hell, I was in band from 3rd grade to my 6th year of undergrad/grad. That makes something like 15 years of band.
No, far from it. I went to a small engineering school in Missouri that had no music majors. That's why I was able to be in marching band, pep band, etc. I wasn't by any stretch of the imagination music major quality, nor was most of the band. It was a bunch of engineers having fun at games.
band geek mobster.. good taste.. i'm actually a senor in high school.. play the trombone & take trombone lessons...
I play guitar but I don't read music. In my book, if you really want to be good at an instrument, you've got to play and play often. It helps to grow up on an instrument. When you get older, it seems the time is hard to find for learning and practicing. But, I've had music teachers growing up who knew a whole lot about guitar...just still couldn't play it all too well. Some people have those long fingers and zoom up and down with them arpeggio scales. I had a friend lock himself in his room for 8 months in high school. We never saw this dude outside of school....for 8 months straight. Then, he suddenly emerges and can solo as fast as the best...like Eddie Van Halen or Malmsteen. Yes, he is that fast. He was good at it all.....he had the talent we would all wish for. He may not have had all that guitar theory down...but he had the long fingers and speed to do whatever he wanted....even the classics. Plus, he picks up music easily when he hears it. I wish I had longer fingers...it gives you that reach that is crucial. Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eddie, SRV....they all had it. I may have to get bone splints inserted into all my fretboard playing fingers and then....rehab . I manage throug super-tab sheet music and I really love learning new tunes by ear. The way it evolves into learning that scale used in a song's sole...or learning those chord progressions and tempos. It's like you have learned by listening to the music how to play a great song by a great artist. It can be very gratifying. That is how I manage....I can pick up music well and reproduce it on guitar(not always but a lot of the time). It's just a matter of learning the notes and repetition. A CD player comes in handy to be able to rewind and listen to passages of music over and over to figure it out. I still wish to read sheet music(non-tab) and learn more scales, theory, etc. . This continues to be my dream . Good luck!
