I'm not sure how much of a put-on this is, but apparently Merge (Eitzel's record label) wants to try and push him to the hip crowd. The unfortunate part is that Eitzel's music is almost unremittingly sad.

I saw him do a few shows at SXSW a couple years back. He was undoubtedly drunk for most of them (apparently that's a common thing), but they were some of the most incredible shows I've seen.

To give you an idea of who we're talking about here (Eitzel is a fantastic songwriter), listen below:

Here's a song he wrote about the bar that used to be at the top of the World Trade Center

His albums, whether solo or with his old band the American Music Club, have more instrumentation.

I think the idea of trying to push him to the Starbucks crowd is hilarious.

This one has Mark getting advice from a lady who writes for "Joan Rivers Fashion Police." She has some pretty hilarious suggestions for changing his lyrics to make him more palatable to the hip audience. It gets a bit ugly.

The fail in this thread is pretty strong, especially when bumpin it 21 hours later because you got no response.

This guy should be famous. He should sell as many albums as Nickelback did.

Unfortunately, any quick look at the charts will confirm that people love pop culture far more than they love good music.
