It seems like we always have threads on music videos and favorite guitarists, but what about bassists? I'm posting a few videos of songs with bass lines that I really like across a few genres. I'll post more as I think of them, but feel free to contribute:

XTC: "Mayor of Simpleton" - Great jangly 12-string in the back of this pop song, but I really like how this one dances around the chords during the verses and then slips into a more syncopated line during the chorus. (Yes, these guy's looked silly back then.)

Randy Weston: "African Rhythms" - Once Alex Blake kicks in that greasy sounding, snarly upright... it's difficult not to move your head along with it, and as usual, his solos are just sick. Probably one of my favorite current upright bass players.

Check out this old 80's video game. Pay close attention to the song's bass line.

I've always felt that this would sound fantastic with a more modern rock sound, a little faster tempo, and with a nice, crunchy bass sound.

I'd love to hear that.

The Smiths: "Barbarism begins at Home" - Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke made that sound so good... although he had a few solo songs I still like, Morrissey by himself never really did much for me. I'm glad I got to see The Smiths when they played at Cullen Auditorium so long ago.

One of my favorite songs ever. awesome bass line leads the tune, all at a smooth as can be 5/4... or is it 3/2 and 2/2? Theory not my strong point, but love the timing.
