Well...... It's about time hate him or love him the slim shady one's back. I was never a huge fan but it's nice to have him back in the game. He's coming out with a new album this quarter and it looks like the first single has already been leaked. Love shady's lyrics/vocals. It's also got Dre with a dope verse. Get rid of whack ass 50 though.
I agree with moes, but Encore was kind of a disappointment for me. I used to be absolutely obsessed with Eminem, so its nice to know that he's not done yet.
+2 I couldn't resist the old people comment I made earlier. I used to hear that from the "elders" around me in the '80's. "Rap? I thought you were talking about music... har har har..."
I don't think rap is "music" per se, but thats another topic. Its certainly an art form though, more like spoken poetry set to a background made by a guy who is good at making beats with a computer. A poetry that has to be completely in meter though, unlike some songs. It has to fit like a puzzle piece. Rhyme, be clever. Not always easy to do. When I first heard "Stan" I was pretty blown away at how a white trashy kid from Detroit could be so lyrically gifted. I got into rap after that but was mostly disappointed with what I heard from other mainstream artists at the time. Marshall Mathers LP, Illmatic, and pretty much anything put out by Outkast were the albums I considered to be the best I heard.
Anything to get some variety and away from hearing Lil Wayne and TI on every song that's played. Eminem is underrated - I love a lot of his stuff. Heck, even his acting is underrated - 8 Mile was a pretty good movie.
I'm listening to his older stuff right now too since I haven't listened to his stuff in a while. Must say he's pretty damn talented. I agree with the Marshall Mathers LP comment. Some other favorites just to name a few (mocking bird, toy soldiers, when I'm gone).
Marshall Mathers LP is a top 5 rap album for me. It was mind blowing the first time I heard it. It was then affirmed that Eminem was no gimmick. I think a lot of the album was heavily influenced by what was going on his life at that time. It really showed in his voice.
I think it Marshall really shocked White America and he knew it. They were used to hearing all the foul language and stuff and the "F the Police" NWA vs Nancy Reagan and so forth from the African American rappers, but here was a blonde-haired, blue-eyed white boy spitting raw sewage out of his mouth left and right. Most good "music" is shocking to the public when it first comes out. I think he mixed in just enough shock-value with pure talent and a heaping spoonful of "F the critics" That being said I enjoyed his albums afterwards but they were nowhere near the overall level of MMLP. The Slim Shady LP had great moments, and I really think The Eminem show, had Em not had too many radio-friendlies on it could have been almost as good as MMLP. Encore was basically nothing but radio-friendlies. By then the angst was gone. It was all "I love you Hailee" and not enough "Die Kim, Die" Til I Collapse is a ridiculous song. I would listen to that song to fire me up.
I just don't understand all of the Eminem love. I think he's terribly overrated. His music is very gimmicky and he's never consistent. Frankly, I think he's absolute garbage.
It isn't very easy to take lyrics like "b**** Imma Kill you!" as some sort of deeper meaning. You could say The Marshall Mathers LP is the magnum opus of a man who is angry at society, pop culture, his mother, his father, and especially his wife, and he expresses his views on these issues in ironic measures with over-the-top violent and offensive lyrics meant to mask his true feelings of hurt and remorse. You could also listen to it and say "What the hell is this crap?" which many people do and I wouldn't blame them for it. For what its worth, "Stan" is considered by many as a monumental song and has been on countless "Best <insert title>" lists since its release. There are something like 17 tracks on the album, 3 of them I think are crude skits, a few others are just guest appearances. So when you think about it, he really only uses about half the album to truly state his thoughts on pretty much every subject that was relevant at the time, which seems even more remarkable.
Yeah, I think I fall into the "what the hell" camp. I had completely forgotten that Eminem existed. There are a lot of songs on "Best of" lists that are complete crap, so I don't really find that impressive. This was, however, one of his few songs that I actually thought was fairly good. I always hated this about rap albums! I don't really want to listen to 10 tracks worth of skits and conversation. Just put out some damn music.
Good to see Em doing good again. I heard he was doing real bad at one point. Not a fan of the goofy tracks he makes but his more serious songs I enjoy more.
Em is good but honestly i don't think he's always had great lyrical content (which i care little about anyway), his flow and word play are what draws me. Since Em is the only one that seems to get Dre motivated to work, I'm all for it. I just hope this album is better than his last. I disagree, about pretty much everything. I don't think rap is anything like poetry, despite popular belief. Great poetry, to me, is about creating something that many people can relate to, on many different levels. Something with multiple meanings, deep and superficial. Rap is only one of the 4 elements of hip hop. Which is more about expressing ONE'S SELF, and doing so in the most real and unfiltered way possible. I'm sure it is confusing for people who aren't that in to rap to see the few rap artists that they love have so much respect for rappers who's lyrics are filled with tales of senseless crime but i feel that is the heart and soul Hip Hop. It is the ugly, cold-hearted and uncensored TRUTH. It seems to me that rap started to 'fall off' around the time guys figured out you could lie about your past and it would be profitable or not really say anything other than the staples (cars, clothes, and hoes).
is that going just a bit over the top calling his music absolute garbage? soulja boy is absolute garbage not em. i do agree that his recent albums have been very "meh" but to say his earlier stuff was garbage is insane. further you can't deny that the guy is very talented when he is motivated....or maybe you can since you say he is garbage
