Rob Harvilla's graphical dissertation on Mim's "This is why I'm Hot" brings up a lot of good points: http://www.villagevoice.com/music/0711,harvilla,76021,22.html <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ANw7ZVrMHCE"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ANw7ZVrMHCE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Man, rap music is horrible these days.
At night I can't sleep, I toss and turn Candle sticks in the dark, visions of bodies being burned Four walls just staring at a ***** I'm paranoid, sleeping with my finger on the trigga My momma's always stressing I ain't living right But I ain't going out without a fight ----- i've never been a big rap fan, but Mind is Playing Tricks on Me is one of my favorite songs.
I gotta agree, this is the worst rap song ive heard in awhile! I think people like it because it has an eerie little sound effect that similar to the X files or star trek
Today's rap is complete garbage. These guys have nothing of any substance to say, they only care about selling as many dog**** records to as many mind numbed MTV watching robots as they can. And the videos all look EXACTLY the same. Some guy rapping in front of his "crew" with a bunch of skanky women dancing in slow motion. Wow, what a revolutionary concept for a video. Remember when rappers used to actually have something interesting to say? Isn't that what rap was originally supposed to be about?
I liked that poster's TurboTax rap better. But that had to be the geekiest breakdown of music ever. Is this what the village voice has come to??
There IS rap with tons of substance, but you have to look for it. Check out Lupe Fiasco's last album or even his mixtape, the kid has a lot to say and he's as lyrically sound as ANY musician alive today. Check out Nas' albums, Common's, Talib Kwali's, etc. Mainstream Hip Hop is garbage from a lyrical standpoint, but if you like beats more so than lyrics then you're in heaven, because today's artists are pretty creative with their music. Overall, however, "Hip Hop is Dead" as Nas would say. For lyrics, look beyond the sales chart, dig a little bit deeper and you will find the good stuff.
Suit yourself, but then don't go around proclaiming that everything out there is garbage when you're too lazy to take a second look.
I agree, I had to listen to the mainstream hip hop station here in Dallas the last 2 days at work, and it was just horrific how every song sounded the same. Ever since "lean back" all anybody wants to do is stupid hood anthems. I'm with ima, I'll stick to the classics as well.
Well, you're in the minority then. Those songs wouldn't be topping the charts if the majority of music fans weren't paying for them. That's what the public wants, that's what these artists are supplying...basic supply and demand, it's a business afterall. If you live in the Suburbs and have kids, chances are they are buying that type of garbage or downloading them to their iPods. For the record, I have equal distaste for most of the music out today.
this is why it's trash... this is why it's trash... this is why... this is why... this is why... this is why it's trash this is why it's trash... I am going to get rich off silly songs like this one from this rapper hip hop guy... But... that chick in "Is this Love" from WhiteSnake was HOT, man. I am thinking he's got that arrow on the chicks I've had. :
"Today's rap". lol. Rap in the 80's for the most part had nothing to say, either. Rap started out with nothing to say in the 70's. Today's mainstream rap has more to do with the history of rap since the 70's than Public Enemy. There are different sub-genres within rap - always has been and always will be. There are people that get off to Paul Wall, Master P, etc. beats now just as much as they did 2 Live Crew, Fresh Prince, Sugar Hill Gang, and Whodini back in the day. This argument always sounds like grandpa off the Simpsons... "back in my day...." Like what? Five Minutes of Funk, this ain't no junk, pull your bottom off a tree stump? Face Down, ass up, that's the way we like to _____? lol. Rap started out as a way to get party-goers hyped up. Today's mainstream rap, like I said, has more to do with the original intent of rap than Talib, Nas, etc.
You could do this with any genre...I mean, who's topping the rock charts these days? Nickelback and such? Not exactly high quality music. Rap is doing fine, as long as you know where to look...I mean, there's plenty of good mainstream rappers...Nas, Jay-Z, Common, Chamillionaire...
