Daft Punk is French house, not exactly techno.

The hippest kids in France don't listen to techno really, just house like Justice. The hippest kids in Europe still listen to lots of techno tho, Richie Hawtin and Riccardo Villalobos minimalist stuff because the regular techno is reserved for Paul van Dyk/Oakenfold crapfests in Britain and the Americas. Personally I like Cologne's Kompakt label, Michael Mayer Superpitcher Justus Kohncke and that crowd.

If you want a good Kompakt album go buy or download their Total 3 album, it's the best of the Total's.

Please don't insult Daft Punk by calling them techno. They are the greatest electronic artists ever to face the earth and it would be a disservice by generalizing them as such.

I got to see Daft Punk live in Miami almost 2 years ago and it was freaking awesome. I have never seen a better live performance. THey had on spacesuits and it was honestly nuts.

Calling Daft Punk techno is a travesty.

But aside from that, I'm a huge fan of electronic music, though I hate Trance (see: Tiesto). I'm a big fan of Underworld, Daft Punk, Justice, and pretty much anyone on Ed Banger records.

My favorite act by far these days though is Boys Noize. If you've never listened to him you are missing out. Here is a video clip I shot at his set at Coachella this year.

I think the casual listeners will refer to all electronic music as techno, while more avid listeners can discern between the different genres. Just like you could lump Creed, Metallica, and the Pixies under the giant umbrella of rock music. Or Kenny G, John Coltrane, and Modeski, Martin and Wood for jazz.

I haven't tried very hard to listen to new, current techno, I just have the old Carl Craig, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson classics in my iTunes playlist. I usually listen to D&B and Deep House. Hopefully I can get some suggestions out of this thread.

We park our cars in the same garage. When I here "Techno" I think of that gay club diva vocals crap. Which is unfortunate coz the gays usually have excellent taste.

I've heard so many names used for the electronic stuff I listen too. Neu-Rave, Electro, French House, Dance Rock, etc.... I think we should just use two metrics. Ghey and Not Ghey. I hope this clears things up for some.
