I was never a huge hip-hop or rap fan when it first came out, but I did buy a few albums here or there on a whim (mostly a rock and jazz fan). However, the album that did it for me was Nas's "Illmatic." That was one of the best albums that I have EVER heard (I rate it up there with some classics from both rock and jazz). I recently started listening to that album again and several others by Nas after I bought his latest album.

Now I want to try out some other good hip-hop acts (classics and newer ones that might not necessarily get the heavy rotation but are good ones, not the overplayed MTV/radio drivel). I have listened extensively to Nas's stuff, but I was looking for other classic albums from other artists. Any recommendations from the bbs? Thanks in advance.

I say you can't ever go wrong with 2pac. Maybe pick up "All Eyez on Me" or "Me Against the World" first. My favorite is the Makaveli album.

I've been listenting to hip-hop almost exclusively lately. My favorites are:

    The Pharcyde-Welcome to the Pharcyde
    Hieroglyphics-Full Circle
    MF Doom-Mmm Food
    Blackilicious-Blazing Arrow
    Mablib-Shades of Blue
Any Roots, but I really love their latest, The Tipping Point

I think you'll definitely dig the Madlib album. He raided the vaults at Blue Note and used a bunch of old jazz recordings as samples. It's mostly instrumental, but it is amazing.

    Illmatic is a great record.

    I suggest the following classics:

    GZA - Liquid Swords
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
    Ghostface - Supreme Clientele

These fall a lot more in line with Nas than most other popular artists people will suggest.

Isnt "Good Hip Hop Music" an oxymoron? If you want good music, start listening to rock!

These are all good for hip-hop. I also recommend these:

Blackstar Album: (Mos Def & Talib Kweli)
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
    Dilated Peoples - Expansion Team
okayplayer presents .... Truth Notes Vol. 1 (This is great if you want a sample of good current hip-hop)
Talib Kweli - The Beautiful Struggle

and for Rap: UGK - Ridin' Dirty (Could be the best rap album ever made, a top five for sure)

Blackalicious and Madlib are also some of my faves. You HAVE to check out Rob Sonic and Sage Francis. Both artist have great new records out, resp. debut LP.

Also since you like jazz, you might want to pick up one of The Roots' albums. Their use live instruments and give some of the best concerts I've seen. All their stuff is good. Check out "Things Fall Apart" and "the Tipping Point."

I quit listening to rap after those. I would put Tribe's "Travels" ahead of "Marauders" though.

I agree but if you want to buy a 2Pac record start with "Me Against the World" in fact if it is not part of your collection pick it up, post haste.
