I just happen to be walking through the living room tonight when I caught this performance part way in. I had never heard of this girl before, but her voice stopped me in my tracks. It was just one of those things, and I figured it was worth sharing, as good music always is. Here's the performance from Letterman. Luckily her fanbase works pretty quickly on the uploads. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-7SRulm3w3c&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-7SRulm3w3c&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Apparently she just won 2 Grammy's, so maybe some of you have heard of her. It's interesting to see Dave so taken by her performance, since he usually just gives the customary "great job" and a hand shake. You can actually tell that he enjoyed this one. P.S. Hopefully Franchise3 doesn't get mad that she's a large girl with a cute face.
She could be talking about how to domesticate pigs and we would still be awestruck. Great talent, you just hope she continues to build on it.
Those big lungs sure come in handy...Lol. Just joking people. That was awesome. Thanks for posting it.
She has been famous in the netherlands for some time. I think her first single which was a hit here was Chasing pavements. My grilfriend really likes her songs. She believes this song "hometown glory" is the best song of the album. I'm not that into her songs, for some reason i just do not really like her voice.
I first heard of her through this: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/32z7USfMD1s&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/32z7USfMD1s&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> It's a drum & bass remix of the same song. It turned out to be one of the most popular tunes of 2008 in the D&B scene. But I agree, she's an amazing singer. I don't typically like the slow ballad type songs, but in her case she's the exception.
yeah, my husband lived in the netherlands years ago when he studied abroad and has been a fan for a long time. i do like her voice too but i couldn't stay up that late to watch her last night. i only caught the first 10 min of letterman. thank goodness for utube.
Big girl? Yes. Beautiful girl? Yes. Beautiful voice? Yes. Bring them on. Does anyone find a voice resemblance to Lilly Allen? Sarah McLachlan? Macy Grace? The volume, pitch, diction, etc. I personally admire great smooth-sounding singers like Adele and Sarah McLachlan. I agree, droxford, that song did not appeal to me, either. She needs better songs. The music was spot on, the strings accompanied her and the piano well. She hit the notes and I bet she can get really far. I really liked it and might think about buying the LP.
She needs better management, I have no idea why they would put out that chasing pavement song as her first single.. This Hometown song should have been her first single and IMO she would have gotten much more mainstream attention...
I think chasing pavement got quite a bit of mainstream attention. Pretty much everyone i know, including older family members know of her. The issue is really that people are so shallow that it's very difficult for a "big girl" to really "blow up", atleast in America. Anyway, i think she sounds great and shouldn't be put in the same category as Amy Whinehouse and Duffy, she's more soulful and has more talent. That reminds me of a Raphael Saadiq interview i saw in which they compared him to the same two people. You could tell he was a little uncomfortable he said something like, "...um...i think we're a little different. I wrote, produced, and played almost all the instruments on my album...just a little different." Also, where the heck are all the soul singers? It seems like we're having to look overseas for it more now because the talented American singers are more concerned with making poppy club music to make money.
Music is about the most subjective thing there is, but I'm blown away that some of you like her voice but think the song is bad. I know it can't always be expressed in words, but what exactly was wrong with it, in your opinion?
I thought it was just OK. Her voice is obviously great. The song is a tad bit boring, wouldn't you say. It would depend on your mood at the time, certainly, but even when in the mood for a song like this, I found it a little too boring and lacking in....something...I personally don't think ti was a bad song though...OK, not great, but not horrible. but definitely a great great singer.
Hmm...see I don't consider it boring at all. I think sometimes you have to be in the mood for certain music, sure. Then I think other times the music creates the mood and sucks you in. That's how I felt about this song.
Adele is actually quite famous in Britain since the past year and a half. She just isn't known much in the States as yet. If you want a really great female singer with better vocal range..listen to Alela Diane. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SpwSxHiiNSw&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/SpwSxHiiNSw&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/G-_-l_NaDcw&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/G-_-l_NaDcw&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
