Based on information from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which is conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 67.6 million Americans were obese and 65.2 million overweight as of 2012. The CDC defines obese as having a body mass index of 30 or higher, and overweight as a body mass index of between 25 and 29.9.

This marks the first time that Americans who are obese outnumber those who are overweight.

There are 67.6 million obese Americans vs. 'only' 65.2 million overweight Americans
Most Americans are obese or overweight with 75%t of men and 67% of women
More women are obese than men
The most obese women are African-Americans

BMI is such a terrible measure of anything. JJ Watt (35) is halfway between obese (30) and morbidly obese (40) according to that measure.

Unless one is a freak athlete or professional bodybuilder, the BMI has very good value in assessing body composition.

It's a measure of how fat you are that makes no differentiation at all between bone, muscle or fat. It's not really good at all.

Um, you know that "big boned" is not a real thing? And "bulking up" is a poor excuse for being a ******.

If you are very muscular, you can ignore bmi.

Or the converse -- severe lack of muscle mass.

Are you saying that some people do not have larger frames, bigger/thicker bones, than others?

Everyone's bones are exactly the same size.

    Common knowledge, dude.

    My fix:

Tax sodium, tax trans fat, and tax sugar. Let's stop subsidizing obesity.

This is what happens when you swallow Big Macs and guzzle cream soda every day.

Also BMI is garbage. It says I'm overweight because it doesn't account for muscle mass but im sure all gals and guys be mirin me over 90% of MuricA

Because everyone around you is just a freak of nature like JJ watt?

Maybe I have been going to the wrong McDonald's but I don't see a lot of people built like JJ watt.

BMI works for the general population. It just doesn't work on bodybuilders because of above average muscle mass.

But ya you're right..no one is fat is Murica. We have been calculating it wrong using BMI.

I've never paid attention to BMI because a good amount of my weight hangs between my legs
