Can he get the death penalty? This seemed like a pretty open/shut case for the proseuction. Glad they didn't OJ it.
I think so. That's why the prosecuted where they did. http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2002/sniper.legal/index.html
Hey, just because he founded a religion and we're having problems with some of his followers doesn't mean he should be guilty. And who are we to try and judge this great man? What? Oh, wrong guy. Sorry... carry on and fry the man.
As an aside, RM95 and rim, I could have sworn that you both were against the Death Penalty? Am I misreading your comments here which seem to support, to one degree or another, the deserving application of the DP for Muhammad?
I was simply asking the question for informational purposes. I am staunchly against the death penalty.
I knew yours was nebulous. I'm not sure if rimrocker is being sarcastic or not. The "fry him" charge seems a little abrupt for him.
I'm philosophically in favor of a death penalty. There are some people so screwed up and who commit such heinous crimes that death is a just, fitting, and appropriate end. I'm practically against the death penalty because it is grossly and unevenly applied across state lines, economic lines, racial lines, social lines and even judge lines. That said, there are cases (like this one, like McVeigh, etc.) where that concern is secondary to the obvious dispensation of justice. If more rich white people with good lawyers were executed, I'd rest a little easier.
how do you feel about the recent case of the serial killer (white) in seattle that confessed to 48 murders, received only life? i can only hope that some of marcellus's buddies are in his cell and get "positively medieval on his ass."
No kidding. That dude is freaking screwed up. I'm fundamentally against the death penalty (for more reasons than I care to list), and I'm glad this yahoo will rot in prison the rest of his life. Like you said, maybe he'll share his cell with a guy with a pair of plyers and a blowtorch.
well, i'm with rim philosophically, and while i appreciate the practical arguements, i think the solution is to tighten up the procedures involved. i also do really think it's a deterrent, but i'm in favor of because i think it's the best way for society to deal, and come to terms with, the monsters in our midst. just out of curiosity, were we to catch Osama, and by some miracle bring him to the US for trial, would you think it unreasonable for prosecuters to seek the death penalty?
It proves the practical objections to the death penalty. For the same crimes in other states, he would be executed. And I don't share the same hope. Even if you are this guy, being sentenced to life should not mean rape, torture, etc.
The best way to come to terms with the monsters is to do evrything we can not to create them in the first place. If however, we fail in that regard and a horrid crime is committed, I think the death penalty is justified for justice's sake.
I think we should start to take advantage of this NAFTA thing and outsource some of our imprisonment obligations to Mexico
Good question. Bin Laden is a despicable man and deserves a few hours with Marcellus' buddies, but frying him in an electric chair won't fix anything.
I guess my comment would be that it's not about "fixing anything" but a question of justice. justice for his victims, dead and alive.
To me, death isn't justice. It's just perpetuating the cycle of hate and pain. It also bothers me from a logical standpoint -- if killing someone is wrong, why is it wrong to punish that person by killing them?
