Is this just the worst thing to ever happen in the history of television? I am way past their target audience, but all I see there is debauchery and absurdity.

Tell me I'm wrong.... now prove it!

I am no fan of MTV - but how is it the worst thing to happen in the history of television? I can think of worse things.

MTV, BET, and VH1 are all a waste of cable tv...they can be replaced with other educational stuff like sports.;)

    You are wrong.

    Because I say so.

    And what I say goes.

    Period.

    Thank you.

Maybe I'm exaggerating with "the worst thing in the history of television"... but I simply see no merit to their programming.

I'm not really talking about the music video stuff.... although some of that is not worth watching.

I think I'm talking about their original programming.

What inspired this is my watching a show with a young girl whose tendency was to get drunk every night and she would complain about school getting in her way.

She called her mother and explained how she was taking things on a pass/fail basis so that flunking wouldn't hurt her record too bad.

Another scene she shows up needing to read a book and write a paper by tomorrow.... and shes grousing about it.... hungover as hell, I'm sure.

And it was not really presented in such as way as to be portraying this as a negative pattern.

    What ever happened to striving?

giddyup, you're talking about "Sorority Life", right?

i saw that exact episode and almost died when i saw that sequence of events you described... if i ever took a course p/f when i was in college told my parents... boy would i have been a dead man!

i used to love watching MTV... but i was talking to my little sister last weekend (she's 21 and still loves MTV) and told her how i think that now, at 24, i think i'm finally out of MTV's target audience b/c every show seems stupid and trite... even the "Real World" series, which i watched religiously for years and years and years... they're all a bunch of snotty whining kids! oh no, maybe i'm just getting old! :(

MIssed by a mile, again, dear lady. Another nice but failed effort at trying to nail my hypocrisy. Keep trying; you'll get me someday.

I was just channel surfing during a commercial and happened upon one of these scenes and was curious.

You see I go a lot between Ch 25 Discovery and Ch28 A&E on our cable system. Ch26 is the Weather Channel and (you might have guessed by now) the infamous MTV is Ch27.

I think I watched two commercial segments worth of MTV.

My "worry" is that this kind of junk is foisted on our young people. It is worthless trash but unfortunately a lot of young people watch it constantly.

My concern is more about the broadcast values of MTV than of this particular girl. I know that there will always be people going down the drain .... until they get a grip.

So, channel surfing is striving then?

Sweet, I reach for the stars.

This smells of the politics of destruction. Stick to the discussion. Everybody deserves some downtime. I worked 3 hours on Saturday this morning.

MTV is an OKAY channel, but I'll take my TLC and Discovery channel any day. Also TNT and ESPN usually are good, when the show Rockets games.

Giddyup, I was just making a joke (the smilie and the LOL should have been clues). Believe it or not, I don't spend my time devising ways to "nail your hypocrisy."

Giddy, quit being so sensitive...everyone is laughing at you.

Haha...reminds me of a bad song, "MTV Get off the Air":

    Hi
    I'm your video DJ
I always talk like I'm wigged out on quaaludes
I wear a satin baseball jacket everywhere I go

My job is to help destroy
    What's left of your imagination
    By feeding you endless doses
    Of sugar-coated mindless garbage

    So don't create
    Be sedate
    Be a vegetable at home
    And thwack on that dial
If we have our way even you will believe
This is the future of rock and roll ...
    ...
    ...
    And so it was
    Our beloved corporate gods
    Claimed they created rock video
Allowing it to sink as low in one year
As commercial TV has in 25 ...
    ...

    Tin-eared
    Graph-paper brained accountants
    Instead of music fans
Call all the shots at giant record companies now

    The lowest common denominator rules
    Forget honesty
    Forget creativity
    The dumbest buy the mostest
That's the name of the game

Question: Why does MTV not change their name?? I mean it is sorta pointless to be known as "Music Television" when you hardly show music videos anymore.
