    If all mtv showed was music videos their ratings would be like zero. Hey do I want to wait for some video on mtv or go online and watch the exact video I want at any time.

    The shift to lack of music videos and more reality television happened at least 10-15 years ago on MTV. Well before Youtube.

    Even without youtube showing music videos was becoming commoditized. Where is the differentiation if you are watching a music videos on VH1,BET,MTV etc. I think it was a sound business move. Imagine if all they were doing were showing music video as the youtube et al started blowing up.

    Their name no longer deals with music. MTV doesn't stand for Music Television anymore. Its just MTV.

    The used to show this on Thursday nights, and there was a big lead up to it, and that was cool, and then they had a post game show, and that was cool.

    The last VMA i sat through was early 2000s. I think Blink 182 closed out the show.

    Yes, but I don't blame them.
    Jersey Shore is a hit; sadly. Its the latter end of the Reality TV era, but its still the Reality TV era. If they don't follow the trend they will get left behind.
