Does that really matter when Texas is so corporate business friendly? Think of the gdp growth.

Living in Massachusetts, Masshealth was amazing for me. It was great as a transition for me from military service till I completed college and got a healthcare plan from my employer.

So when I hear some southerner laugh about "taxachusetts" I just point to health metric and education metric in Mass vs their state.

I do notice that conservatives try to dog pile on California because they need to find an example of a "leftist" run state that is "failing" but usually leave Massachusetts alone. It's funny because on most policies, Massachusetts is more liberal than Cali and no one can deny the success of Massachusetts in terms of quality of life metrics from social well being to education.

A trend I notice in that map:

The only conservative run states that have a relatively high standard of living are sparsely populated states with extremely low population density. The only population dense states with a relatively high standard of living are Blue states.

Pretty much all highly populated red states like Texas and Florida are lower. That says a lot.

Went to Massachussetts to drop my son off to college last week. They do have high standards. Every house was well maintained. Brand new painted wood boards, no trailers, grass trimmed.

How many ranches do I have to sell to afford to live in Marin County?

That's a joke but it kills me that I'm thinking about moving...Taos, Carolina, Oregon, who knows? I'd love overseas but that's not an option while my mom and uncles and cousins still need me around. Sometimes I wish I was less useful.

It makes me sad and sick to think about it, but I think about it all the time. Texas is a wonderful State that has gone straight ****ed-up. I thought I could shelter myself and ignore it all, and that has definitely worked for years, but I'm just not sure I can tolerate the dumbassery much anymore.

Cool research. +/-1 year after 65 isn’t so bad. Kind of speak to how your baseline is much more important than other factors such as the place you retire.

I would say most “people” outside of Hou/Atx/SA/Dal for most part suck rather than the geography itself. Alabama and Mississippi take the cake for me though with the Venn Diagram of stupid people and sh$ty geography.

And no Alabama people … Gulf Shores is basically Florida. It doesn’t redeem 99% of your sh$tty state. And then there’s Mississippi where they still think it’s cool to have pro plantation owner plantation tours. How I got talked into doing that is a whole other story. Seriously Fck Mississippi. I’d rather go visit Siberia in the winter.

The group I was with last night had another Texan and we had to endure a bashing of the state from a bunch of Minnesotans. Some of whom were saying the US should just give Texas to Mexico. I was trying to let them know that Texas isn't what most people think of it. Even so with this raft of new laws and that Ted Cruz is still elected the critics have a point.

Minnesota is far from perfect with some big problems but MN has handled COVID-19 well for the US with among the highest rates of vaccinations and a good balance or restrictions with openings. In the Twin Cities adult vaccination is around 90% and our hospitals have been stressed but not overwhelmed. At the same time MN leads the country in voting participation with easy access to the ballots and mail in voting. A vibrant economy while still having a very affordable cost of living.

The winters will still try to kill you but MN isn't looking bad compared to TX.

Check out Corvallis in Benton county. You can get a small farm within a 10 minute drive to the city, only 90 minutes to PDX. Not cheap but possible unlike Marin. If we weren’t set on moving out of the country, that’s would be the #1 spot I’d target to put my family.

Can vouch for this. Very sane little university town, with lovely outdoors nearby... can get to gorgeous coastline and forest hikes easily.
