With all these 'Moving to' threads I thought I'd start my own :D. I'll be attending Hunter College (in Manhattan) this Spring and eventually try to transfer to NYU's or Baruch's business school, Depending on whether I decide to go into Accounting or Finance. Moving to New York will bring new challenges so I am excited yet will miss some things about Houston. Not to sound all cheesy but the one thing I'll miss most about Houston, is the Rockets.. I've grown so accustomed to the 10 or so games I attend each season the past 4 years I was here. Not to mention getting all the games on local tv :( .

Well at this point, I am considering getting a place in Manhattan or Queens. What are some good areas that are pretty nice/recommendable(without paying an arm and a leg) considering I will be commuting every day? I am not lazy but do not wish to spend a full hour commute each way .

Oh yeah, If the Rockets make the playoffs I may come back in April :D . I already told my friends to get them as soon as they go on sale ;) .

I'm moving to NYC next summer as well. Even earning low six figures, its hard to afford a one bedroom apartment in manhattan. My boss wants me to live next to the building which is around 5th and 40th, I said, well, you're going to have to give me a raise if you want me to be able to afford to live there.

ny sucks. it's dirty, expensive, and the people are rude. worst of all, you will inevitably get mugged and/or stabbed.

if you're a student, there's no point living in manhattan unless you're just flat out rich. you can live much better in an area like astoria, queens and commute to hunter. i'd take a look at places in queens.

I went there once. The best thing about NY was getting my "I love NY t-shirt" and coming home. I hated it.

I was in NY last week and people seemed really friendly. I was wondering where they got this bad rep from.

In New York City a man gets mugged every 11.4 seconds.... I'd sure hate to be that man....

    (Anyone remember that SNL skit?)

I was in New York (for the first time) just before Thanksgiving this year. Everyone was nice to us, even the waiters at Carnegie's Deli

my friend lives eith 3 other guys on 88th st forgot what ave. he pays about 800 bucks a month in rent, which is very low if you get to live in the good part of manhattan. so use craigslist, and look up rentals in manhattan, if you dont mind sharing, you can def live in manhattan.

a share through craigslist is definately the way to go. only about 80% of those looking for roommates are criminally insane, pretty good odds in this town. ahywho, i have a question. where is the good part of manhattan?

its a great area but the rent is crazy expensive. i think below 105st and above 168 st in manhattan is pretty good.

krxnsnoopy... I graduated from Hunter College in 2003 after moving to NYC in '99... congratulations for making the move...you might be the first other member on this board that goes to my Alma Mater...

i would recommend anywhere near the upper east side or astoria queens... you can find affordable rent prices if you look hard enough... besides the upper east side, you might want to consider spanish harlem... thats where i lived for two years, hence the screen name... its a quick ride on the 6 train to Hunter...

but i also lived on york avenue and 73rd street... its close to the East River, and there are lots of students that are moving into the neighborhood...

you might be able to find decent deals under $800 in any of those neighborhoods...

i might be able to find you a contact for a no fee rental management company... i'll get back to you if you are interested...

That's right, it's ridiculously expensive in that area with all the old rich folks in the really nice buildings. I wouldn't go any further north than the 120's personally. That's just too far from the action.

Hey guys, thanks for all the input so far! :) Yes, I believe the Hunter College I'll be attending is on 68th. So yeah, and I'm pretty excited about this opportunity :D :D

Sure man! I just recently got started seriously looking around for the new apartment so any help would be great!
