I'm moving to Los Angeles this summer and attending Santa Monica College and then attempting to transfer into UCLA, USC, or another school. I'm wondering if any LA ClutchFans can give me advice and tips for living in LA? Freeways and areas to avoid, cool places, etc.? I'm moving into the Santa Monica area and having trouble finding apartments. Are there any areas around Santa Monica that I could move to that aren't too far and easy to commute to Santa Monica from? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks! P.S. Don't worry, I won't become a Lakers fan. I might root for the Dodgers though
Finding an apartment around Santa Monica is a pain. We're doing the exact same thing right now, my cousin's going to go to SMC. I looked on craigslist every day. There's also this real-estate listing called "westsiderentals.com" that has a close to a monopoly in that area - but they're kinda shady. If you have a car, i'd start looking in culver city / mar vista / marina del rey areas to find cheaper housing.
I'm not too familiar with Santa Monica living areas, but I assume they'll be expensive. Culver City is prob your best bet, or even west LA/ around UCLA area. Lots of student housings and apartments. I don't think Marina del Rey has cheap housings, or really anywhere close to the ocean. Of course, when I say cheap, I mean $700 + utilities. LA housing price sucks
The Santa Monica area can be expensive. You can save a ton of money by getting 2 roommates. I heard the landlords in that area are weird about co-ed roommates, so if you room w/ 2 females, just pretend you are of a different persuasion, if you know what I mean. There's also an excellent bar nearby called the Regal Beagle.
Send me an email through the board, i live right around the area you are probably looking for living wise and other tips
Good luck in your move, I have a cousin just moving from there. If I can get a hold of her and ask about some insight.. I'll post back.
Actually I'd prefer to drive a bit north to get to the bar of my choice. OC is just a better place to live. Hehehe I'm just kidding... It was a joke!
I still prefer living on the west side of town and going to santa monica/venice whenever possible, but I might be looking into the silverlake/hollywood area pretty soon to change things up a bit.
