I just found out that I got a job at UNLV as a research analyst. Not the most prestigious school, but I need a change. So I'll be leaving in a couple of weeks and I wanted to see if anybody could recommend any decent furnished apartments close to UNLV. I'm just taking the bare essentials. I'm going to leave all my furniture here in Houston. I have a healthy budget for rent and stuff. Also, I'm leaving my old Honda here too. So for the first few weeks I won't have a car. Thus, I would need to take the bus to work and back. Anyways, the best advice I've gotten so far from a friend who used to live there a while back is not to live on the east side of town. She recommended Summerlin or Henderson. I've done some research and there are nice furnished apartments in Vegas, but I'm concerned about getting to work and back until I get a car. I know there's a poster here with vegas in his moniker (don't know the exact name), but any advice from anyone on apartments and public transportation or anything would be greatly appreciated. I will miss going to Rockets games.
Boy, is UNLV in for a rude awakening. Am I the only one that caught this? You're a researcher, and you researched by "asking people in a BBS"...
I live in Henderson (for the past two and a half years) and can also reiterate that you probably do not want to live on the East-side or areas of North Las Vegas. Henderson and Summerlin are two of the nicer areas with both being about the same distance from UNLV. There are nice apartments scattered all over the place. You might want to consider finding a hotel close to UNLV and renting a car over a weekend and seeing if you can find one that fits your taste. If you're interested in Henderson, I would look somewhere off of Eastern (which ironically runs North/South). It is a major thoroughfare and will have buses running frequently on it. There are "neighborhoods" scattered within Henderson...Green Valley, Silverado Ranch, Seven Hills, and Anthem. The Seven Hills and Anthem areas are definitely upscale and are the furthest away from UNLV. They are generally at the southern-most point of Eastern...but definitely resemble the suburban neighborhoods found in the outlying areas of Houston (Clear Lake, Katy, The Woodlands, Sugarland). I'm not as familiar with Summerlin. But it is located on the outskirts of town on the West-side. It also has many major thoroughfares running East/West that has public transportation to UNLV. As for missing Rockets games...three words...NBA League Pass. Plus, you have four other franchise cities within six hours of driving to go see the Rockets (LA (Clip Joint), LA (Lakers), Phoenix, Salt Lake City). Plus, most of the sports books in the casinos show most NBA games...so NBA League Pass is not entirely a necessity. Get ready for brown. It's everywhere, making it hard to shake the longing of green-filled lawns and giant green oak trees. The people here in Vegas are also nowhere near as friendly as they are in Houston. Almost everyone (the locals) we meet is from somewhere else. It's hard to find many life-long Las Vegans. You'll definitely enjoy the Pacific time zone as all of the East Coast sporting events start early in the evening (4pm-ish) and end early (7pm-ish). All-in-all, Vegas is a great place to live. I stay away from the casinos as much as possible and try to enjoy the non-gambling non-chicken ranch-type attractions that Vegas has to offer. Good luck with the move and post any more questions if you've got 'em.
That's true I guess and pretty funny at the same time...Lol. http://kwamebrownsucks.com/ Thanks for all the information. I found this apartment complex. It's relatively cheap and furnished. The only thing is that it's kinda far from the university. http://property.onesite.realpage.co...n/default.asp?w=camdenhills&t=template_camden Do you know anything about this area? Is it a decent area? I might have to make a trip up there.
I'd have to guess that area is probably "average". I've been around there a few times and never felt like I could be in danger at any point in time. It is a little far from UNLV. I definitely would stay away from anything that requires you to use I-15 (north and southbound) north of downtown. They are doing major construction on that freeway for the next few years.
I'll be there in january, basso probably will be there too I actually want to check out UNLV. I know it's not Stanford or UCLA, but I still want to see what they offer.
i've been living in vegas for almost 3 years now. one bit of advice - bring your car if you can. i mean even if you can catch the bus - its over 100 degrees most of june, july and august. if your budget isn't too restrictive you can rent cars pretty cheap in vegas (hotwire often has 15.98/day rates). if you really need the bus then use this link: http://www.rtcsouthernnevada.com/transit/sysmap/ the 4 buses with direct service to UNLV (i assume you mean the main campus) will be 201, 202, 108, and 109. but the areas on 108 and 109 are really shady. i would try and stay on the 201 or 202 route (west of rainbow blvd. is preferred)... if you have a specific location you want an opinion on you can also send me email through clutchfans
http://property.onesite.realpage.co...n/default.asp?w=camdenhills&t=template_camden this link didn't work for me so I couldn't give an opinion... what's the name of the apartment
off-topic question for boomboom. how many rockets games do you get blacked out (due to vegas being the "home area" for other cities) on NBA League Pass?
The east side is not bad. Parts of it yes, but overall it's one of the more older areas of LV. Anything north of 95 you want to avoid. Summerlin covers much of the far west side of town. It's nice, but nowhere near UNLV. The Flamingo and Tropicana buses run about as far Buffalo on the west side, which is still several miles from Summerlin. If I had my wish I would live in the south part of town, but my job is in the northwest and commuting around the valley is a pain. There are a lot of good apartments and condos to choose from and a ton of new ones are in the southwest, but no public transportation south of the 215 beltway.
Definitely stay in contact so we can hang out. Thank a lot for all the advice. I will definitely message you through the board if I have any further questions. I just don't wanna take my car. I'll probably give it to my sister. After speaking to a few people today, I realized that I'll probably need one though and I think I'll buy one when I get settled there. The link to the apartment complex I posted was from Camden. I know they're based in Houston and I searched their website and they have 29 different complexes in Vegas. http://www.camdenliving.com/internet/html/aparsear.html I believe complex #3 was the one I posted a direct link to, because it was furnished. I looked on craigslist as well and there seems to be a lot of nice houses in the south, southwest, and west side of town with rooms for rent (some furnished and some not). The deals seem very reasonable even though the living situation might be kind of awkward.
Intersting...I use to live in Albuquerque, NM and I maybe went to the casino twice over a two year period and that's because my parents wanted to go...I thought it was just me...I guess when you're surrounded by it, it loses it's appeal... I'll be in Vegas Labor Day weekend...but I'll make sure I gamble and go to chicken ranch type places...
I used to go to Vegas every year to golf (I'm not that good) and eat. I don't like giving money away. I couldnt live there.
My wife and I intentionally stay away so that the casinos don't lose their appeal. I'd love to go hangout and watch some games at the sportsbooks or sit at a blackjack table for several hours...but I like my money too much...and the casinos frown on having a two year old saddled up at the table. @bronxfan...I don't remember any games being blacked out. There might have been a few that just weren't carried by League Pass...but I can't recall any LA,LA,PHX,SLC games not being viewable. @Kwame...the housing market is extremely depressed here right now. If you're looking for a good investment, you might want to consider buying a house in Vegas. Now is also a great time for home rentals.
ah man youre going to vegas. does your bro know yet? and for the love of god take your damn car with you. its such a nuisance to not have a car. screw your sister. make her sheisty ass buy her own car, shes almost a dentist.
I think I found a place, but before I move in I wanted the Clutchfans of Vegas to give me their opinion. It's a 2 bedroom and 2 full bath condo in Summerlin (W. Charleston & Durango). He said it was located next Boca Park (whatever that is). The place is fully furnished, has a washer and dryer, and I would have access to the whole condo, but I would be sharing the place with a guy who needs a roommate. He's asking for $550 and that includes all utilites. No lease, but I do have to give him first and last month's rent. The lease expires in April 2009. Overall, I thought this was very reasonable. Here are the pics he sent me and he said the condo looks almost exactly like the model shown in these pics: http://share.shutterfly.com/action/pictures?a=67b0de21b341427484db&sid=2AbtGrNy2YsmF2 What do you guys think? Is this a decent deal for Las Vegas? Also, is it a good area? boomboom you weren't lying about the color brown being everywere.
