    There's really going to be no way to avoid any Detroit jokes. Mainly because it's a wasteland ;)

    I went to a job interview and they asked if I'd be willing to relocate to Detroit. I said "absolutely not." I then found out that one of the guy's interviewing me was from Detroit. Whoops.

    Suberban Detroit has some very nice areas. Downtown Detroit has some cool spots to hang out including Greektown but has really grown alot. Ferndale is definately the younger crowd with plenty of bars/pubs around. Bloomfield Hills is completely dead as there is barely anywhere to eat. Birmingham is all upscale yuppy crowd but has some old town feel with shopping/restaurants/bars. You could always pop across the boarder to Canada to hit up the casinos. The BEST part about Detroit is its a 4 hour drive in any direction to some really awsome spots.
    W = Chicago.
    E = Toronto.
    N = Traverse City (and the rest of norther Michigan which is very very nice).
    S = Sandusky (best rollercoaster park in the country).

    Detroit crime, like anywhere, just use common sense. I've lived and visit frequently and never personally had any problems nor can I say I know anybody that has.

    All that said, no way in hell would I move there again. It's too midwestern for me.

    At least Detroit is not burning down unlike some places we know.
