Well, ladies and gents, I'm on the verge of moving out of Houston on to greener and hillier(is that a word?! HA!) pastures in Austin. I'm wondering where are the better places to live in Austin. My girlfriend has a job lined up with Green Mountain Power and we would like to live within about 10-15 miles of there. I am in the process of looking for a job there and would greatly appreciate any suggestions of apartments(I was told to look in south Austin) that you all may have. Thanks ahead of time!! ------------------ "Clinton lied. A man might forget where he parks or where he lives, but he never forgets oral sex, no matter how bad it is." -- Barbara Bush
10 or 15 miles? That could be on the other side of Austin from her job!!! ------------------ "You know what they say about the music business. Here today, gone TODAY! - Chris Rock at the MTV Music Video Awards
Where is Green Mountain, Pimp? I just moved out of my apartment (up north) - you could always take that one! FYI - its a seller's market in Austin. Expect to experience sticker shock, especially moving from Houston. ------------------ In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.
Pimp?! Are you going to set us up with a new Man, before you leave? Who is going to give me my sugar?
Pimp....there is alot to be said about the greener pastures in Austin. 1. The cheaper apartments and houses are on the outskirts of town. Dont live ANYWHERE East of I-35, unless you absolutely have to. 2. My one bedroom, 650 square foot apartment in West Austin costs $680 which is about average. On a two bedroom expect to pay at least $900 and up on a decent pad. 3. The traffic is complete hell. Dont expect the nice wide streets, and award winning highway infrastructure that is in Houston. Never mind the fact that I-35 is the most deadly stretch of freeway in the NATION (USA Today). 4. Dont expect the friendliness (like most Houstonians) around town or especially on the road here. Everyone from the East coast is moving down here, so the drivers suck, and people arent as friendly. 5. The Rockets arent on TV here. I go to Showplace Lanes (a freakin bowling alley for christ sake) to watch most of the games. So you better get NBA league pass, or expect to spend alot of nights out without your girlfriend. Most importantly: 6. Dont be lackidaisikal (sp) looking for a job here. Sure the jobs are a-plenty for the most part, but the competition is fierce and everyone and there mom wants to live here. ABSOLUTELY IMPORTANT!!!: 7. What ever you do....DONT WORK FOR DELL COMPUTER CORPORATION!!!! Contrary to what Forbes says is one of the best places to work, me and many many many others beg to differ. common phrases: Dell Hell Dell Jail Dell-catraz The Round Rock Sweat Shop Good luck Pimp!!! Give me a shout when you get to town... ------------------ "Chucky who?" Charles Barkley
Funny...I used to go with my friends to Showplace Lanes to watch the Rocket games whenever I visited from out of town. That's a decent sports bar in the midst of a bowling alley. I like Austin and all. I enjoy frisbee golf, nature, and the great access to lakes and camping. However, since I went to school there, it seems to have gotten 10 times worse. Traffic is hell. Everyone wants to be in Austin. It's expensive. Therefore, regardless of how many of my friends live there, I just can't see making it down there. I can't stand overpopulated places. Make sure you live on the same side of town as her job -- traffic is much worse than Houston, thanks to all the construction and poor street planning. If she is on the south side of town, you might look at places toward San Marcus -- It's a beautiful area, and not too far down the freeway. ------------------ Stay Cool...
I go to UT, and I have good days and bad days. Sometimes I love the business of the city, but bumper-tobumper traffic on the weekend is ridiculous. The drivers are selfish and ruthless. Everyone DOES want to live in Austin, and it is getting annoying. The city is not keeping pace with it's growth. When I graduate, I would like to stay in Austin. But, the rent is WAY up there. There are plenty of apartments on 30th street that are 450 square feet but go for 650 a month. That is just unethical. Hopefully, with the economy slowing down, rent will also. I doubt it though. Maybe I DO need to get out of town. ------------------ "Roses are red. Violets are blue. I'm a schizophrenic and so am I."

1) Expect to be homesick. 2) Get yourself a $0.50 Longhorn decal for your car. It does wonders as you drive around town. When I graduate, Austin will be on my list of cities where I would like to work. The # 1 spot will be Houston. I am sure that the Austin suburbs are great places to live, but there is no place like Houston. ------------------
I spent almost 20 years in Houston. It is home in a way, but I would never move back because of the weather. I have also lived in New York, California and Colorado. My preference is still Austin, and I am glad to be back. ------------------ Cohen
Is there a Big Demand for Pimps in Austin?? ------------------ CUT Tino These Heaves are just getting Ridiculous!
This is absolutely not true. I have spent two terms as a co-op (intern) at Dell for total of 8 months in desktop engineering. Sure, we work hard, but you've got to in order to stay ahead of the competitors. My group was responsible for Dell releasing world's first Pentium 4 Willamette workstation. Dell treats their engineers well, and the job has lots of perks. As for living in Austin, RocketsPimp, if you're going North, there's lots of nice places off of Metric between Braker and Wells Branch Pkwy area. Down South, there's alot of new places coming up West around William Cannon. If you've got the cash, it's nice to live around the Barton Hills close to Barton Creek Square (mall). Excellent view, and I'll probably live there post-graduation. ------------------ "Oh No..." -Bill Walton in 97 just before Stockton's buzzer beater
Baqui99- You had the luxury of working for one of the good divisions within Dell. If you knew anything about sales, you would know that it is a freaking sweat shop. If anyone tells you differently they are a complete LIAR! I lived up at Dell...they made you work OT.... they didnt care if you needed time off because your grandmother died...you had to work (if you didnt have time off of course). Since you were an intern, you didnt get to see the true ins and outs of working for a company that has HELL written all over it.... ------------------ "Chucky who?" Charles Barkley
Drew: I work for Dell and I'm very happy here. While I have heard those pejoratives before, they typically come from people who were either fired or left the company because it required professional conduct or strong job performance of them. I ran into one student of mine who'd left Dell for Tivoli. He raved about working there. Why? Because he could wear sandals, t-shirts, and torn jeans to work. And because every Friday he and some work friends dragged a keg out to a soccer field for a company Happy Hour. If that's what a person wants out of employment, I guess maybe Dell isn't the place for them. Tivoli's probably a really good company to work for. None of the above reasons, though, are attractive to me. Most of the people I know who dislike(d) working at Dell have/had extremely low-skill jobs. I hate to be the one to break it to anyone, but being on the bottom of the totem pole sucks no matter where you work. What the majority of those people really hated were their jobs and skill sets-- not working at Dell. Anyway, Pimp-- it depends what you do for a living. ------------------ I take her to the aquarium, she says shark, I take her to the planetarium, she says dark.
Kagy- You are correct in the statement that Dell is a great place to work....DEPENDING where your work within the company. I worked in sales for a year and a half right out of college. Unfortunately I did not have enough "expeirience" to work in Marketing or Advertising. Why are you stating that ONLY people who have inferior job skills and poor conduct hated there jobs?? I had friends who had Masters in business, smart smart people who worked their asses off who hated Dell and the job because you get treated like a number. Many of my friends who worked at Dell got layed off last Thursday not for LACK OF JOB PERFORMANCE and CONDUCT, but because they were a number. Obviusly you have one of those cush jobs that requires you to be there Monday-Friday from 8 to 5, however, most employees especially in sales....dont have that luxury. I had to work 2 to 11 pm with Tuesdays and Sundays off for MONTHS on end.......Is that a great reason to be at Dell?
Well, again Drew, that's your perspective-- interestingly, though, it almost looks like you're doing the same thing you accused me of doing earlier. Namely, making a blanket statement ("you didnt get to see the true ins and outs of working for {Dell}") as though your opinion was the only one based on thorough examination of every job at Dell. BTW, I have a dozen or so friends in sales-- some home consumer, some small business, some corporate, some government/education. Each of them that I've asked agreed that you have to work your ass off in Dell sales-- but none of them found that requirement to be untoward. I think the problem's yours. ------------------------ Freak, **** that. When I was a tech lo these many years ago, we didn't have to lug a stupid keg out to a soccer field. We had Happy Hour over in RR-J. ------------------ I take her to the aquarium, she says shark, I take her to the planetarium, she says dark.
