I know this is quite possibly the worst time to be leaving Houston as the Rockets are in the midst of something great, but I have to make the move to NYC for my career.

My future employer has given me a $3,500 allowance for relocation, and I am debating on whether or not it is a good idea to ship all of my furniture out of my 1 bedroom apartment to my future apartment in NYC (when I find one). I have a couch, a coffee table, a tv stand, a tv, a queen size bed, a nightstand and a dresser. I will also have a few big boxes that will need to be shipped.

Since I am starting work on 3/31, I will be heading up there the week of 3/24. My sister lives up there so I will be living with her until I find my own place. Since this is the case, I will need to have my stuff stored, then delivered to my future address when I find an apartment.

I was looking into a service like Pods (wwwDOTpodsDOTcom), but apparently they don't deliver to NYC. Does anyone have experience in this kind of situation? Thanks for your help.

A relocation service will do that but I doubt it will only cost 3.5K. Probably just have to move up with whatever can be held in you car or her apartment then leave the rest down here and have someone ship it when you are ready.

i moved my stuff (about the same amount, minus the bed) for about $1200 from houston to DC. You could ship it the day before you leave...that way it wouldn't arrive until after you got a place hopefully?

I used some more of my relocation money to ship my car out and pay for my plane ticket..

    Good luck young man.

Thanks for all of the help so far guys.

CaseyH, I submitted to a website last night for a price quote and got an e-mail today saying it would cost around $1,100. Any reason why you thought it would cost more than I was allotted, personal experience? Just looking for more info.

Dave2000, I was actually out of town when the Rowdies tryouts happened this year, ah well, it was a blast for me while it lasted. Thanks for the well wishes, please continue to take pictures of the Power Dancers and posting them on the board ;)

Asian Sensation, its a big enough bump for me to make the move thats for sure

kaleidosky, do you remember which moving company you used? were you satisfied with the experience? As I mentioned above, I did have one company call/e-mail me today and give me a price quote for $1,100 for everything I have listed above. They said they would do everything (from taking stuff apart, to moving it from my apt to the van/truck, to moving it to the new place and re-assembling). They also offer storing it for 30 days free. I'm not planning on shipping my car up, but I do plan on paying for the flight up. Thanks for all your info.

rimrocker, thanks for the well wishes and the quote, made me smirk

Good luck on your move to NY. I moved out there 11 years ago for my career and just recently came back to Houston.

Keep in mind, movers aren't 100% great. Be prepared to have some knicks and slight damage. Hopefully you won't have any. I had several of my things damaged.

By the way, don't let their estimates fool you. They will QUOTE you lower than it will actually be. Until they see your stuff in person and weigh it, you won't know how much it will be. They are just estimates. Which company were you thinking of using?

By the way, you have to find out if your furniture will actually FIT in your NY apartment. Sometimes, the apartments have weird stairs that don't allow certain sofas to be moved in. I've had friends with that problem. Also, a mover will factor that as well with the estimate. Some even charge per STAIR to move your furniture. With the exception of your TV, it may be better for you to just sell your furniture here, use that money (or some of your relocation money) and just buy a new sofa, bed, tv stand. Just my advice to you as someone who did the move to and back from NY.

Having moved here last July, I have to say, save yourself the hassle with your furniture. Wait till you find a place to live and then get everything on craigslist, you can find anything you need for cheap on craigslist.
Good luck on your move, and remember, League Pass is your best friend.

This is great advice. Mateo sold all his furniture except his bed and TV when he moved here and refurnished with "manhattan sized" furniture

Great advice all, I really appreciate it.

ROCKET RICH NYC, three companies have contacted me, Baker Moving Inc. has estimated $1,100.

Locke, arif1127, I have also thought about doing what you guys are suggesting. Leave/sell my furniture here, once I find a place up there, see what will fit and then move what I can up to NYC. The only reason I am thinking of moving everything is to take advantage of the relocation money and not have to worry about buying all new things when I really like what I have =/

Can't you just use your "relocation" money to buy new furniture? Unless you MUST ship a considerable amount of stuff with you, then it'll be better to ship everything together. But if you only have a few boxes of essentials, its better to mail those and buy the big stuff when you get to NY. That's what I did. I must say, buying stuff all over is a hassle in itself but you don't have to buy everything at once. You'll just need a bed at first and you'll pick up more things over time.

Another thing, it also depends where you decide to live. If you plan on living in Manhattan you might need to get rid of your car too. If you plan on living in the other boroughs and plan on keeping your car, you can stuff as much stuff in your car as possible, of course that means no bed. But think through it thoroughly. I sold my car but I wish I had it now that I moved to Queens.

I did a lot of research by checking BBB and looking up ratings and all that stuff.. between that and looking at cost, I went with Al's Mini Move. It's a company based in San Antonio I think, but they move all over the country.

The guys were pretty relaxed and easy to deal with, and it was easy to get in touch and communicate. The negative was that they told me my stuff would get there on a certain day, and then due to storms, needing sleep, etc., they ended up being about 36 hours late, including a delivery after midnight which was annoying as hell.

But nothing was damaged, everything arrived, they moved it all up 3 flights of stairs.. Overall, compared to horror stories of other movers, I was satisfied.

Of course, all of that was 3+ years ago, so I couldn't tell you what the current situation is. I found the company name by checking my old yahoo e-mail, so I have Al's e-mail address if you want it: PppistolA@aol.com (866 317 5472 was his #)

for real, unless your furniture is heirloom-> emotionally priceless, or at least antique or vintage-> extremely expensive and near impossible to replace, LEAVE IT ALL BEHIND. seriously, do yourself a giant favor.
