I was born in Houston and lived there til I was 7 then my parents took me away to cold colorado. I may be moving to the Houston area and was wondering which areas to avoid, which burbs are good etc.. I've heard pretty much everything west is good east is bad. Also are most jobs in the city or do the burbs have a lot of offices also? (suburbs in some areas only have housing)
there is not an easy answer to anything you just asked, just know this houston is crowded, there will be no way to avoid traffic, your best option for avoidin traffic is setting yourself up to drive against it, i.e. live in town work on the way out, houston has always been a city where it's not about the side of town you live in but the neighborhood, there are pockets of good and bad all over
Buy Jeff's house and all your wildest dreams will come true. http://bbs.clutchfans.com/showthread.php?t=169484
Houston's burbs all pretty much look the same. If you have kids, Fort Bend and Katy ISD are pretty decent.
So, do you need to find a job when you arrive? Are you looking for a house or renting an apartment or what?
If you have any of your 2000 facebook friends living in one of those areas, you have just thrown him/her under the bus.
Live central period Apartment prices have leveled off a little so rent for 6-12 months while looking for a permanent place
I'll have to take offense to the condemnation of the Third Ward. There are some pretty rough parts to the neighborhood, but there's some nice parts of it too, including a strip of mansions along Braes. I would say most apartments in the Third Ward should be avoided, but for renting/buying a house, the neighborhood is good -- a lot of character, central location, good people.
Where ever I'm living, I don't want to be right down the street from "some pretty rough parts". Maybe I'm just a snob.
I grew up in Deer Park and, after college, lived in Clear Lake and later bought a home in Friendswood. Of those, I preferred Friendswood. Now, I prefer Austin.
Ok you're right. Not all of the third ward is bad, but I think it still takes some stones to live so close to one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Houston. This gentleman could be your neighbor (well, before he was executed by the state of Texas...) http://www.tdcj.state.tx.us/stat/williamsrichard.htm
I visited my uncle for two summers in 97 and 98 in Greeley/Denver Colorado. I loved it there! although i was around 15. Where at in Colorado did you live and why are you moving?
If I was moving to Houston and had a family, I'd probably stay around the Memorial area -> it's pretty wooded out there. Or possibly around the I-10 and Bingle/Voss area since it's also wooded and is like 10 mins from downtown.
lol I've been looking at the katy area the most but have wondered about the woodlands and misery city. I'm not tied down and have no kids. Finding a place shouldent be all that hard, i'll probably room with sombody. As far as job goes, houston is a huge market and i've seen jobs in my industry posted alot (receivables, payable) so not too worried about that. Main thing is I dont want to be stuck in a neighborhood that I dont fit in.(only white guy in an asian neighborhood or whatever) or a ghetto.
Easy 1. I hate the cold and snow 2. I've been obsessed with houston ever since I left. oh and p.s. the Rockets!
