Yes, random thread is random. I have a friend who is writing a script and I was talking to him about how I tend to like movies that end abruptly and go immediately to black, as opposed to long, drawn out endings with a slow fade to black or credits rolling over the final seconds of footage. So, I was trying to think of examples, and I came up with a handful of movies that end this way (posted below)...but it started bugging me that I couldn't think of more, because I know they are not unusual. I was wondering if you guys could think of any other movies that end this way, and possibly discuss whether or not you prefer this kind of ending. I know some people really dislike it. Without looking for a youtube clip, check out Limbo if you haven't seen it already. It is rather infamous for an abrupt (and apt, given the theme of the movie) ending.
This one actually shows the end... <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6yb1GmvIxxw&hl=en_US&fs=1&start=198"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6yb1GmvIxxw&hl=en_US&fs=1&start=198" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Thanks, didn't wanna repost it myself.. and didn't realize until submitted I posted the one that cut off.
This one doesn't have an abrupt or sudden ending, but it has a weird part that actually made it in onto the movie. <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zq5-6PkVGCg&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zq5-6PkVGCg&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>
I think there are many horror films that ended abruptly. 'Drag Me to Hell' is one of them. I watched it a couple of weeks ago. I don't mind this type of ending, I think at times it adds to the intensity of the movie.
Good point. I actually forgot to add to my original post that I'd rather not include horror movies in the discussion. They end abruptly all the time, but it's often for a cheap scare.
I love movies which end abruptly... Such movies are typically good to talk about and I love to construct endings on my own.. No Country for Old Men is the latest movie I can think of. The Wrestler maybe? It had an open-ending if I remember correctly. And Alfred Hitchcock's Birds had an abrupt ending.. he never explains why the birds attack.. fabulous movie though. .
Finished watching "Broken Flowers" Awesome movie, with an awesome, abrupt ending that only adds to the overall feel of the movie.

The Grifters. Annette Bening is having an argument with John Cusack, loses her temper and smashes the wine glass he's drinking from; then it cracks into little pieces and some of them cut his throat and he dies.
Agreed, the young guy looking out of the car window. More poignant and probably a bit more plausible than all the other random scenarios in the movie. Really enjoyed that supporting actor who was pretending to be a detective, too. Fun, bored middle-aged guy stuff.
United 93 - one of the most powerful endings ever. Couldn't find a video but her's a summary from http://www.ruinedendings.com. Spoiler The passengers of United 93 devise a plan to stop the terrorists by getting two passengers to the front who have both flight and air traffic control experience. They try to keep it quiet for awhile until the terrorist (with the bomb) turns his back on them for a second. The passengers scream and run towards the terrorist, beating him within an inch of his life, and discovering that his bomb was fake. They make their way to the front of the plane, where they fight off the younger terrorist who was kept out of the cockpit. Once they deal with him, the terrorist piloting the plane starts to shake the plane about to stop them from breaking through the cockpit door. After much struggle, the passengers eventually break through the door, and grab the two terrorists flying the plane. By this time, the plane is far too out of control. The very final shot shows the plane descending towards the ground through the view of the cockpit.
