Saw this yesterday and really liked it. I took my wife and she was on pins and needles because she didn't know anything about the story. I knew it and wondered how they could build tension when most already knew the outcome. I thought they did a great job and Tom Cruise was very good. Anyone else see it? DD
I work at movies during my time in the winter so I got to see it free... along with a few poster i snagged anyways, I was really dissapointed. There was no action and it was all talking. In addition, Id have to say this was the worst job by Tom Cruise just be cause he doesnt even seem like Stauffenberg in the movie. He has no accent, and the whole movie is just talking. It made him stick out so much compared to the other people who actually had accents and seemed like they were German/Nazis/British.
Dude, this movie was so awesome!! I think everyone and their mother should see this to know that not every German was bad back then, that some actually had a conscience and knew to do the right thing. I dont understand why this movie has recieved such negative reviews. GREAT MOVIE! A++
I haven't seen the movie, but the documentary on the History Channel points this out...it discusses German's crisis of conscience following the war which lasted for decades. At one point they interview a man who says he realized when he was celebrating the World Cup coming to Berlin with a German flag that it was the first time many felt that it was ok to celebrated Germany again. Very sad. Sins of the father visited on the son, I suppose.
Germans don't normally speak English so.......... In an effort to not duplicate some of the mistakes of past movies made for English audiences(mostly) depicting a character that doesn't speak English but for the movie, I believe the director(Singer) made the right decision to play it straight. The only thing else he might have done is go "Passion of the Christ" but that is difficult to do when the dialogue is so key to building up the suspense. Tom Cruise can't help that he is one of the few Americans casted for the film. We know he can pull off an accent for a period film(Far and Away anyone).
Agree, that watching Cruise speak in an American accent was puzzling. Meanwhile, a bunch of the Nazi troops spoke in a British accent. I didn't buy it. At least let him speak English in a German accent.
I agree... If you're going to do a movie about the Nazis and have the film dialogue in English it seems at the very least they could have had the decency to do it in a German accent.. I didn't care for the film, but I'm a Tom Cruise hater too though, so whatever..
I think masterpiece movies are ones you can play out as reality. Take "gone with the wind" or "the godfather" for example. But in Valkyrie and in various other movies, I could clearly see the director pulling the string in the background....
Im really into movies... if you want a list of good movies of 2008, here it is Synecdoche, New York the wrestler milk let the right one in slumdog millionaire doubt curious case of benjamin button waltz with bashir Gomorrah frost/nixon The OSS Vicyk Cristina Barcelona
Yeah that was the same problem I had with Finding Nemo. None of those characters sounded like fish at all.
You're right! As far as I can recall, not one character in any Pixar movie sounded like a fish! Seriously, how dare Hollywood make a movie and expect an audience member to focus on the story and not get distracted by unimportant.. umm hey look! a squirrel!
War movies where English people potray German officers has been going on for years. Accents? What about the story? The plot? The drama? The fact that these men not only risked their own lives, but the lives of their families and children to try to save Germany? I find it enthralling. DD
I haven't seen the movie, but will probably Netflix it eventually. But, I don't see why having Tom Cruise speak in a German accent while all the other Germans speak in an English accent makes any sense. That's even worse than letting Cruise speak with an American accent. For some uniformity and still speaking English, perhaps they should have had everyone speak with an English accent (though many would wonder why Cruise was putting on an English accent) or everyone with an American one.
1. The story sucked, its intriguing but theres no action. The Trailer makes it seem like theres gun fights, and lots of explosions. 2. In your case about "the fact these men risked...", you can pretty much apply that logic to any war movie. 3. Drama sucks when the acting sucks. 4. when youre watching a movie and you can see the director pulling the strings, its not fun at all. Go watch slumdog millionaire or go find the closest theater for "let the right one in" or Doubt. Much better movies
the problem with valkyrie is that the story was poorly developed and tom cruise was awful the movie as a whole was average at best
