First off, two good things happened before watching the movie: the Silent Hill and Ultraviolet trailers.

Silent Hill: looked really good and really creepy. However, there were moments that left me a little skeptical and a little worried that the movie would turn out to be another flop in a long line of video game to movie failures (along the lines of say Resident Evil).

Ultraviolet: I've heard some good things about this movie and was glad to finally see a glimpse of it. Wow! This looks really good and could be a cult hit like Equilbirium was, only moreso.

Onto the movie: I loved the original. It had its weaknesses sure (most notably Kraven), but it seemed a nice, somewhat fresh take on the vampire genre. I liked the dark, goth, modern day setting, the gadgetry, those machine pistols, the forbidden love angle, the action scenes, the Lykan-Vampire blood fued, and Victor was a nice intimidating bad-guy.

As for the sequel though, it was good in a guilty pleasure sort of way. But ultimately I feel it strayed too far from the original's concept. I think the best way to describe it is to compare it to Chronicles of Riddick. Pitch Black was a pretty bad-ass and fresh sci-fi adventure/horror and one of Vin Diesel's best. The movie was great in part because of it's simplistic tone. The sequel though, tried to do way too much and got bogged down in its rather cheesy story. It had some really good moments, but were rare and had little if anything to do with the main storyline (the beginning bounty hunt and the prison escape). I've always felt that the movie would have been far better had it remained a simple cat and mouse story between the bounty hunters and Riddick.

Same holds true for Evolution. The first movie had a dark, (somewhat) simplistic style to it that the sequel doesn't stay faithful too. Now granted it breaks away from the original in a far better way than Chronicles, but Evolution still gets bogged down in it's backstory and sadly, Markus isn't near the villain as Viktor or Lucian. And where I thought the story would follow the war between the Lykans and Vampires with Selene and Michael caught in the middle, it becomes centered around Markus and his brother with the Lykans and Vampires pretty much taking a back seat. And while there's a few good action moments, the gunplay is still lacking. This isn't to say I didn't walk out of the theater satisfied. I did, but it was more of a hollow satisfaction.

I saw it last night, mostly because of my clinical fascination with Kate Beckinsale. Have to say I was surprised..............I thought it was better than the first. Not it's winning any awards, but all in all very entertaining. But then again, I could have just been blinded by the light. :D

ultraviolet looks like it has the stupidest premise and how odd that the premise is exactly like Resident Evil. Yeah it has a creamy cinematography, but how often does the virus enhanced chick come back to whoops some ass. On top of that, how many times is Milla Jovovich going to star in the same role?

    but i digress.

Almost seeing kate beckinsale in the nude was worth it. very worth it.

So can someone post the intro story again on evolution? How did one brother become vampire and one brother become lycan? Or was Markus always vampire and his brother became infected by lycan? I missed that part of the explanation

they both got bit by different animals and therefore had different fates. Corvinus is the anti-hybrid so to speak. Corvinus was just "magical" and therefor his offspring went in two different directions.

Man, the nude scene was a jip. I figured I'd at least see a nipple.

if they did, half the theater would have a simultaneous, "OHHHHHHHHHH" and then proceed to the restroom. It would've caused mayhem. I for one support no nipplage because chaos would've ensued.

Resident Evil never even crossed my mind, probably cause that movie was a big vg flop (in my mind) about flesh-eating zombies that I'd soon like to forget. This is about genetically enhanced humans embroiled in a civil war with their normal brethren. Like I said this movie reminds me a lot of Equilibrium in that the concept has been done before, but it looks to be a nice spin on it. And of her roles, only Fifth Element, Resident Evil and this are comparable. She's hardly being typecast.

Btw, it's from the same guy who did Equilibrium (probably why I'm looking forward to it :) )

Saw it today and liked it. Thought it was MUCH better than the first Underworld. Great to see Beckinsale in that black, tight outfit again. :D

    POSSIBLE SPOILERS:
I thought the special effects were 100x better in this sequel. I did think it was weird that you couldn't tell there was a difference in Seline at the end other than she was stronger and could take on sunlight. I guess I just would have liked to see her tranform a little just to SEE that she is different/better.

My wife did point out something confusing though. At one point, Michael asks if Marcus was a hybrid, and Seline says yes. Then, later on, she says that there has never been a hybrid before Michael. Did we both mis-hear or misunderstood?

Return to Blue Lagoon, Fifth Element, He Got Game, The Messenger, Million Dollar Hotel, The Claim, Resident Evil 1 and 2, Ultraviolet and .45 (just completed drama). Her past few movies have been of the sci-fi/horror genre but it does not define her career.

I heard the same thing...possible plot-hole though maybe Seline was referring to the fact that Markus was the first (aside from Alexander).

I really enjoyed the first Underworld and I look forward to seeing the second one.

Did they leave the second one open for more Underworld movies?

As long as Kate can fit into those tight leather outfits, we will have more Underworld movies.

Personally, I'd like to see a Blade-Underworld crossover.

I guess they kind of did. Although, I don't know how they can. I mean, who are they going to fight? Everyone is dead.

The way they left it open reminded me of how the first Matrix ended. The whole "I don't know what is going to happen or how this is going to end" schtick.

    POSSIBLE SPOILERS:

Remeber in the first Underworld Viktor kills the lycan in the chamber. In the sequel Kraven comes to get Markus while he is asleep, but Markus awakes from the blood of the lycan that dripped into his chamber. The blood of the lycan mixed with the elder blood of corvinus made him a hybrid.

At least that's my take on how he was a hybrid, so yes MIchael was still the first hybrid. Who knows maybe markus comes back from the dead like Michael did but a bit hard to do when he's just bits of chunks.

    ***Spoiler***

WHat exactly happens to Kate Beckinsale at the end of the movie, when she can safely stand in the light? I didn't understand how Marcus dying makes her a human or a hybrid (if that's what she became).

Maybe one of two things. Either the bloodline of the Elders has been ended.

(william, markus, aleksander) and she became human. But if that's the case then there is still Michael so which mean the bloodline lives on and she did not turn human.

Possibly Aleksander's blood not only gave her enhanced abilities but also made her immune to sunlight OR Michael giving her a good romp in the sack and passing on his seed made her immune to sunlight *tee hee* :D
