Sorry if there is already a thread about this, I looked through all 9 pages and didn't see one.. Anyway. After seeing the previews online and in theaters prior to TDK, and after having seen lots of praise for it on Amazon and other places for years, I finally went and picked up the book. Finished it quickly. Like it. I was wondering what other people who have read it think about it? From the quick images in the movie previews, it looks like they are trying to be faithful to the book, at least visually. Looks like too much emphasis being placed on Dr. Manhattan, but that may just be for the 'wow' factor for the previews.. After reading, and re-reading some parts of it, I can certainly see why no one has tried to make a movie of it until now, and even now, if they follow the book, I doubt people are going to like the way it plays out. A 'feel good story', it is not. Not wanting to get into a bunch of spoilers or anything, so I will just ask what you guys think about it? Oh also, can anyone identify the music being used in the preview? It sounds familiar, but I don't know what it is. Thanks
There's no way they can do the movie without a lot of CGI. The song is The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning by Smashing Pumpkins. I'll try to keep this vague because I can never remember if the spoiler tag is "spoiler" or "spoilerS" and there's no button for it... I imagine they won't do the psychics/monster part? There's so much going on in the book, I'm excited to see what actually gets CUT

the movie doesn't come out for another 8 months or so. they probably *only* have cgi to show in previews.
Man I loved this comic book, the best I have EVER read. I'll hold back though. That son of a b**** better not make this all flash, no substance like he did 300. Add that to the fact I saw this preview and the one for Terminator 4 back to back when I watched the Dark Knight, I nearly cummed my pants as a result of a nerd boner.
haha i found the orginal version.. from batman and robin! <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GV_XMQ7uXHA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GV_XMQ7uXHA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
From what I saw in the previews I don't think they are being that faithful to the book visually. The movie looks way to stylized and the heroes, especially Night Owl, look too much like they are out of Batman and Robin. The idea behind the Watchmen wasn't about how heroic heroes are but how terribly flawed they are and what does it mean to be a hero but also be subject to becoming old and pathetic. Spoiler For instance in the book Night Owl is passed his prime and is has started to get a soft middle aged belly that even his costume can't fully hide. In the previews though he is still buff. Silk Spectre rather than being a sexpot she is in the position where her looks are starting to fade and part of the tension of the book is that Dr. Manhattan realizes that she like his fiance before is mortal and subject to age and decay while he will remain immortal. I liked the graphic novel a lot and still plan on watching the movie but from what I've seen it does bother me a bit that they've chosen to make it more like a comic when the idea behind the Watchmen was that comic heroes are more human, flaws and all.
Has the same fruity flavor as the movie. And I guess it should it was also directed by Schumacher. I'm just glad that Uncle Fester and company are back together.
If anyone is interested the entire comic is posted online here http://forums.funny-games.biz/watchmen-t9939.html
I share your concern, but ... Spoiler I read an interview with the guy who played Nite Owl where he talked about playing an out of shape, impotent hero. I'm hoping that means that the images we've seen online of him looking buff are from the flashbacks to his glory days and that we'll see the "spare tire" Nite Owl in the present. Which, hopefully, means they captured the spirit of the graphic novel. Hopefully.
A judge ruled that Fox owns some rights to the Watchmen. Does this mean the movies won't be released, or maybe delayed? http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/25/business/media/25fox.html?ex=1387861200&en=5ccf7428af49e8f5&ei=5124&partner=digg&exprod=digg
I read the book fairly recently (couple months ago), and I thought that it was pretty well done-- as should be expected from the Great Alan Moore. My only beef with the book was the ending, which I thought was a bit tacked on. Sure, it does allude to that happening earlier in the book, and it is believable, but considering the history and psychological records of Rorschach, I don't think the diary would've had the effect the book implies it would. In terms of it not being filmable, I remember hearing that they wanted to give the directing job to Gilliam, and after funding for the movie fell through, his response was that it was unfilmable anyways. I kept this in mind as I read, and I completely agree. I think you would be hard pressed to make a GOOD movie of this without 4 hours of screen time. 3 and half at LEAST. But apparently the producers want it done in 2-2 1/2 hours and that's how it's being done. As Gilliam said, that pretty much defeats the purpose of Watchmen. There is too much important commentary and too many important themes to pack into 2 and a half hours, and it's all completely relevant to the story, imo. Also, there were points in the book where the comic being read IN the book was more interesting, but the ending of THAT was tacked on as well (imo).
