As most of you know, I was not a big fan of Slumdog Millionaire, just was prideful about the hype that it received. Last night, on OVGUIDE.com, I watched a movie directed by Harvard Graduate Mira Nair (Vanity Fair). It's based on a book by Jhumpa Lahiri, which was a bestseller.

Anyways, this movie was the first to bring tears to my eyes, because of the brilliant acting, and the realization of myself as a first generation Indian. Even though most of you aren't Indian, the movie will reach out to you so many ways. Kal Penn does an excellent job of acting, bringing out his serious side, as well as Irrfan Khan (the 'cop' from Slumdog). Both of their performances, sadly, went unnoticed, but it received great reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

If anything, I hope you guys check it out on the website above...it will touch you deeply....

I saw it on HBO or Showtime some months back, I thought it was really good. I was moved when you find out the significance of his name. The only part I didn't like was the white girlfriend being a b**** about not getting enough attention or whatever when he was in mourning.

I actually saw this movie at a movie screening with Kal Penn. He was teaching 2 South Asian studies classes at the school I go to, interesting stuff.

I watched it in a theater a couple of years ago, I thought it rocked. I told virtually all of my friends about it, a lot of them were first generation (whatever) and those who did see it told me they really related to it, especially being born in America and having immigrant parents who were always 'restless' despite the fact that they were living and working here for years, and how they always talked about retiring and moving back home after all these years.

Kal's best movie by a mile, I don't really think much of him as a comedian, his movies are all contrived and annoying. There are only so many "getting high and chasing tail" type of movies that you can do. This movie showed me that he was a talented actor who, for whatever reason, chooses to do mostly silly and pointless movies.

Sorry for the rant, it was a great movie :)

The trailer was moving but the towards the end, the movie was disappointing. It was still a great movie since not many are made about second generation immigrants.

If you liked The Namesake, I'm sure some of you will enjoy Shanghai Kiss with Hayden Panettiere.

But to many of his movies are already like that...I was fortunate to see that he has a serious side by doing this role...it was an amazing film nonetheless, and maybe I'm just into the serious roles, but everyone did great in their roles as well....

I was surprised that Mira Nair was able to work with a popular cast and crew...

and I apologize...I did not know that this was shown in theatres...

This movie looks so dumb. It's a ripoff of the Namesake.

wow this movie cant compare to the gravity that the plot brings it in "Namesake"....

for some reason i've become dependent on Rotten Tomatoes...but the ratings for this movie arent even there...

i was surprised when Namesake got 85% ratings....

    I just saw 'Shanghai Kiss'...

I think that was a horrible story...the protagonist is basically a pedophile....

he gives up kelly hu for hayden panettiere???? what kind of story is that??

There was no underlying theme in that movie whatsoever...

I watched it on HBO last year - and it actually induced two tears from me - and I can count on one hand how many times I've cried as an adult.

I totally related to Kal Penn and felt all of the guilt in the world about it.

    It's such a good movie...

and as stated before, when I watched this movie, I also had guilt...I neglect my parents a lot and watching this film induced tears...very rare...but i love movies that help me realize something about myself....
