A24 has premiered the trailer for the sports drama “The Iron Claw” starring Zac Efron and “The Bear” breakout star Jeremy Allen White. Sean Durkin (“Martha Marcy May Marlene”) wrote and directed the film about the tragic, true story of the Von Erich family – a dynasty of professional wrestlers who made history in the intensely competitive sport in the early 1980s. The brothers not only had to battle inside the ring, but also outside, they were plagued with a series of tragedies. Efron plays Kevin Von Erich alongside White as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich, Holt McCallany is Fritz Von Erich, Maura Tierney as family matriarch Doris, and Lily James as Kevin’s wife Pam. Tessa Ross, Juliette Howell and Angus Lamont produce the $20 million project which was shot in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Chavo Guerrero served as the wrestling coordinator for the film. “The Iron Claw” opens in cinemas nationwide on December 22nd. https://www.darkhorizons.com/official-trailer-the-iron-claw/
This looks like it might be worth a look. I got Fritz Von Erich's autograph as kid when my dad took us to Houston Wrestling at the Coliseum a few times a year. Also had autographs from Wahoo McDaniel, Mil Mascaras, Johnny Valentine and others that I wish I still had today. Yeah, I know I'm old.
You all would be horrified if you learned how many hours of podcasts I've consumed about old, and mostly dead, wrestlers - which is especially bizarre considering I don't even watch wrestling (anymore). Will watch this Von Erich movie for sure.
As much as I enjoyed wrestling as a kid and obviously recognized the name, I did not realize how bad …all the kids were wiped out mostly suicide and young..out of the what 5 or 6 total brothers.. The fact one lone brother made it to have a full life and even barely for him
I saw the trailer yesterday and I didn't realize that was Zach E and then the guy from Shameless........its a story close to home so I will watch
Wife and I watched this yesterday, really well done. Depressing as hell but the performances are excellent, particularly Holt McCallum and Zac Efron. Efron really impressed me, I didn't think he had that kind of range but he really carries the film and I'm not a wrestling fan, only had passing knowledge about this story.... A-
Nice The Stone Cold Steve Austin, Jim Ross and Jim Cornette podcasts got me through Covid. Loads of stories.
Without spoiling I think I can say that Effron didn’t really look much like Kevin VE. Enjoyed the movie though. Definitely see it at Alamo if you can for a bunch of cool old school wrestling footage.
I feel like they rushed everything in the last half of this movie. The vice documentary on youtube was better than the movie especially with all the stuff they cut out due to run time. I didnt realize how HUGE these guys were in stature AND popularity just watching the movie. Their popularity didnt come across in the movie at all. Homie from Shameless and The Bear playing Kerry is crazy when you see who this dude was in real life. that was a bad casting, I dont care how good an actor he is. Also the mother came across really cold. I dont know if that was a choice, but she didnt seem to care about anything at all. Efron was good in this. Rick Flair was AWFUL lol Only watching docs online did it come across how crazy the story of this family was. I thought the movie was fine but if you go online and see those docs on this story the online docs are much better.
My grandfather took my brother and me to the coliseum to see Houston Wrestling back in the late 60’s. We sat up in the cheap seats near the rafters and my brother to this day says that is the most frightened he’s ever been in his life. It was a rough crowd. Lots of people brought their own beverages from home in brown paper bags.
