Anybody going to see this, or have already seen it? It's at 97% rotten tomatoes, got all kinds of love in the Chronicle on Friday, and the subject matter (U.S. bomb disposal unit in Iraq) has me intrigued. The only thing giving me pause is that I heard it features the infamous handheld-camera technique that I've come to know and love in Cloverfield In the Chron article the director was saying something along the lines of the camera work is supposed to be from the perspective of the viewer, which makes me think it might be a little more surefooted than previous films using similar camerawork. Just thought I'd get some feedback before I spent $10 on a potentially great movie ruined by the cinematography.
Oh yeah, I'm on the Netflix already, but was thinking of seeing this in theaters. my bad Moes...this can get locked if need be.
I saw this yesterday. It is certainly better than most of the summer movies this year and it's pretty good - but, I certainly wouldn't say it was one of the best movies I've ever seen. 3.5/5
Just got back from it--thought it was awesome. Performances were great, action was tense. The handheld camera does get a little annoying but I got used to it pretty fast. It's a very 'serious' war movie but it doesn't get preachy...it just kinda shows the Iraq war from the perspective of the bomb unit and the American soldier. Just surviving each day. Thought it was great, well worth your money for sure.
saw this last night and loved it I would echo the thoughts of jello77 really well done pic i could feel my heart start pumping a bit faster during some of the more tense scenes. I took 2 girls and this other guy (one of their friends) and i wasnt sure how they would like seeing a war type film I convinced them to see this instead of Funny People and they absolutely loved this movie. Recommend it to those who want to see something good this weekend and avoid the rush of the new releases
This is the best war film that's come along since, what, Three Kings? Neither pro- nor anti-, but a war film. Given the buildup, the ending approached perfection: Spoiler [Holds up his baby son]"Sometimes there's only one thing in life that you really love..." [Cut to: Back in Iraq, bomb suit on, smile on his face.] ("Sorry, kid, you're not it!")
Finally saw it yesterday, and I thought it definitely lived up to the hype. I gave it a 10/10 on the "last movie you watched" post and I stand by that.
Until catching "500 Days" and "Julie and Julia" this weekend, would've said this was the best thing I'd seen all summer. No political or cultural subtext, just an honest to goodness war movie. Great, great firefight scene. Hope Renner and Mackie get some hardware next March. And some good supporting players: Ralph Fiennes, David B. Morse.
The only way I could've enjoyed it more was if I had a couple of raspberry lemonades during the show.
There must be something wrong if you agree to be a bomb tech. It would seem it is just a matter of time until you die.
