...Or at least, the current cast and director are out! Sony is looking at a reboot. LINK Culver City, CA (January 11, 2010) -- Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012. Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises. The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production. “A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning,” said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment. “Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi. “We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else’s hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable,” said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio’s chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. “Now everything begins anew, and that’s got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can’t wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012.” "Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."
How to screw up a franchise even more..... Would have been nice to see them atone for the clusterf*** that was Spidey 3.
I can't wait for the reboot!!! Spider-Man starring Michael Cera as Peter Parker, Megan Fox as Mary Jane Watson, Ed Helms as Dr. Curt Connors/Lizard and Robert Pattinson as Morbius
fking A! not another teenage superhero movie!!!!!!!! I don't give a damn about superman when he's in smallville and i won't give a damn about a teenage spiderman with teenage problems, i want to see full grown superhuman heroes damn it
spidey 3 was an abomination mike cera was parker? the guys can only act in one style no f'n way please i think they should just let it be spidey 1 and 2 was great and they screwed up 3...i cant remember the last time i was sooo disappointed in a movie
I would boycott the movie if Megan Fox were cast as Mary Jane....too old now if they are going back to high school, but I always thought Rachel McAdams would have been perfect as MJ.
Back on track though: Marvel movies have become kind of predictable. X-Men: Good X2: Great X3: Garbage Spider-Man: Good Spider-Man 2: Great Spider-Man 3: Garbage Hulk (Eric Bana version): Average Hulk (Edward Norton version): Slightly above average Iron-Man: Great Iron-Man 2: ??? I guess by the third movie, directors and screen writers run out of ideas which would be a lameass excuse considering each of these comic properties has more than 30 years of history/stories.
I'm cool with this. The Raimi-Mcguire version ran its course and ushered in a whole era of superhero films. Spider-Man 2 was an all-time great. Still, it's time the comics Spider-Man cast got a true big screen portrayal. If they go the reboot path similar to the animated "Spectacular Spider-man", which it sounds like they may be doing, return to the Lee/Ditko/Romita comic roots of "a bunch of teen/college kids hanging out, and one of them happens to be a superhero," feature way more Gwen (as main love interest), Flash, less-emo Harry, Liz Allen, M.J. (as one of the gang), and even more Betty/Glory, it could be AWESOME. But they'd need damn good writers to pull it off. And if they do a Venom story reboot as well, it'd be great opportunity not to go the idiotic route of the comics or Spider-Man 3. They should establish and Peter/Eddie Brock relationship that goes way further back than the Bugle.
Awesome news. Hopefully we get to see a better Spider Man movie like what it should've been done in the first place. The first 3 was so forgettable. Raimi version was decent but totally forgettable. He totally messed up the franchise when he replaces Mary Jane over Gwen Stacey storyline. Spider Man CGI look totally outdated and most of his directing had terrible lighting like it was shot on some sound stages.
No thanks. I don't want to be sitting in a theatre with a bunch of rude, giggling, texting during the whole movie teens.
This is only worth doing if it is rated R, MA, or NC-17. Otherwise, forget it. Spidey doing it with Mary Jane starkers!! (otherwise, it'll be a boring rehash, brothers and sisters... time for Sex and Spidey!)
Very good news. Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man was adequate at best and had obviously more than run it's course. Not sure about going back to his teenage years. That might limit my interest in the new movie. But I'm guessing they are wanting to set up another 3 movies over 6-7 years run with a fresh start from scratch and a new, younger audience.
I really don't mind a fresh start to the Spiderman franchise but I don't know about a reboot. I would have liked a new director, cast and atmosphere but continuing with the story already in place. Saying that, I see how Batman was reborn and it intrigues me what they can do with a different vision. One thing I would advise is to go deeper into the Spiderman lore like Batman did with Raz Al Ghul then introducing villians we all are more familiar with, maybe starting out with Lizard/Dr.Connors and Carnage then going into Goblin and Doc Oct.
It just doesn't make sense to me. This isn't like Schumakers Batman movies that really needed a complete reboot and re imagining, Spider-Man 1 and 2 were good movies and did amazing in the Box office, and we are gonna get a new origins story again just 10 years after the first one? I expect Rupert Pattenson or that Taylor Latner guy from the Twilight movies, i can seriously picture this happening.
