OK so I decided that this needed another thread now that the movie is less than 24 hours from release. The first reviews from Rotten Tomatoes are up: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/cloverfield/ I personally think this movie will be amazing but I am sure that too many people are hyping it up to unreasonable expectations.
http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=131975 new thread? i realize it's close, but the other one is full of banter...
"Blair Witch on Roids" is what I call this movie. I guess we're going to see more movies that take after the handheld action cam treating the audience member like their really right there in the action. I don't know if that's good or bad. It could make a bad film worse if not done well. Just what we need...more crap! This one could be decent, though, if they can pull off the scale of the devastation.
People please let me know if this a suspense movie or turns out to be another one of those monster/alien gore fest. The trailer looks pretty intense but I am skeptical this will be disappointing like I am Legend.
Well, I just saw a clip on break, and the special effects are horribly bad on the Oil Rig. <object width="464" height="392"><param name="movie" value="http://embed.break.com/NDM1NTU1"></param><embed src="http://embed.break.com/NDM1NTU1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="464" height="392"></embed></object><br><font size=1><a href="http://www.break.com/index/leaked-scene-from-cloverfield.html">Secret Video from Cloverfield</a> - Watch more <a href="http://www.break.com/">free videos</a></font>
That's not from the movie... that's from the "real time" fake news release a few days ago - it was supposed to be the first cover up of something going wrong... the oil company blamed the activists... bleh The film "footage" was released in italian, german and spanish last week some time..
I keep waiting for the Stay Puft Marshmallow man to come from behind one of the buildings whenever I see the commercials for this.
It is! Okay....just got back from seeing it. I thought it was great. This is a very brave movie in that its not the usual movie-going fare: no questions are answered and its shot all from a live camcorder perspective. Yes, you see the monster, but its not a clear shot like you would get in a usual movie. The 'live-action' aspect involves the main characters trying to avoid the thing. That's why you don't see a lot of it. General breakdown: party; lots of explosions; lots of confusion re: the explosions; mass panic; lots of hiding while trying to find someone; more hiding; the end. I imagine this will very much be a 'love it or hate it' movie. At the end, I heard some guy whisper to someone in front of me that this "better not be the end." It was, which resulted in a "Aww, HELL no!!!!" from that same guy. He just didn't 'get it,' in my opinion. I loved it.
Just saw it. Suspenseful in parts, creepy in other parts, nicely placed humor but I hate it when a writer/director gets too cute at the end. I've gotta see it again to figure a few things out.
Spoiler What the hell happened? If Manhatten was destroyed by the military then how did the camera resurface? I waited for some big reveal after the credits and after 10 minutes of scrolling all I heard was something about "monster" [/
