Just saw this a few nights ago, and I have to say that it was very entertaining. For those who haven't seen it, Better Luck Tomorrow tells the story of 4 Ivy League-bound Asian students who get caught up in(Initially) petty crimes. It's definitely an over-the-top film(Definitely a few twists and turns that just didn't seem right), but I definitely liked that a movie finally portrayed Asians as pretty normal characters. There's no martial arts, and there are no unrealistic accents. It's not close to Oscar material, but it is very entertaining for a film that was allegedly made for less than $500,000(The director maxed out 10 credit cards to finance the film before MTV picked it up). Anyone else seen it?
Sounds very "Kevin Smith" like. I saw it when it first came out back in April, very interesting stuff. Great movie overall and glad to see that Calvin Murphy got some props in the movie.
I thought it was good, but ended at the wrong time. Without giving too much away, I don't think the characters themselves had "resolved" their situation, and it seemed like the director simply didn't know what do at that point. It's one thing to avoid pat endings, but this movie didn't end so much as stop. Furthermore, I find it really hard to believe that such overachievers would have parents that were essentially ghosts.
Did not like this film very much. Was supposedly partly based on a true story. River's Edge looks like art compared to this film.
I thought it was a pretty cool movie. The ending was kind of weak, but i wasnt expecting much when i saw it. Since i've seen the movie, I've seen Parry Shen, the actor who plays the main character, in both Circuit City and Dell commercials. He's on the fast track to success.
Hmmm...I liked this movie...probably one of my favorites of the year. pradaxpimp, can you elaborate on why you didn't like it?
Spoilers, spoilers, spoilers. I really didn't feel any empathy for the main characters. They were underachieving assholes. Then they commit murder and get away with it. Some crime movies I empathized more with the bad guys than I did with the main characters in this movie.
That bad? I saw it with few expectations, and I thought it was a pretty decent movie. Nothing more, nothing less. sub, that's definitely one of the things I found very unrealistic. Not one mention of parents or authority figures in general in the whole movie. SPOILER - I also found the almost overnight switch from cheat sheets to drugs very hard to believe. - SPOILER Overall, I'd say it was an okay movie, and I think that some people could potentially identify with Ben.
OK, for a point of reference, I watched Elephant and I could feel some empathy for many of the characters in that movie whereas in Better Luck Tomorrow, I disliked almost every character.
Oh yeah, the main guy character, the one that shoots the freethrows all the time, is in a Dell comercial. Anyone seen it?! He's the support guy with a head piece/earphone thing on. funny...
