Lets really get this thing rolling... Should we deal some players or just endure the season??? Of course the first question should really be what to do with JVG, keep or let go??? I don't want this to become a list of players we should trade for such and such but rather a post about what you the Rockets fans have seen and not seen... I don't get to see my Rockets play much unless on TNT or ESPN(I'm in the Austin/San Antonio area which is Spurs land)... Not going to pay for league pass if we aren't even competing... I've seen only 2-3 games and well I think its time to rock the boat a little... What happened to Ryan Bowen??? Is he hurt or not good enough... I can't believe he goes from being a defensive hardworker to nothing this season... Lets get what you guys think our major weaknesses are and what can be done....RIGHT NOW.... to improve these weaknesses.... Remember this is not the offseason where you can change coaches, players, draft college kids and sign FAs... This is 10-11 games in and we are not looking good... Lets hear some good answers here not "fire everyone or get rid of this guy or that guy"... Here's what I would do: Defensively we can't defend players one on one so we are going to have to play some type of defensive zone like Timberwolves did a few years ago with KG at the top of what look like a 3-2 match up zone and/or also like the Mavs did about 2-3 yrs ago and have Yao inside... Houston is not athletic enough to defend almost any position well enough to get turnovers consistently... Offensively, Yao would not come off the block unless to make a move ON THE BLOCK, rebound coming off the BLOCK or to shoot free throws... Use the PF for screens up top and leave Yao ON THE BLOCK(ala Shaq)... Gotta get Yao used to staying inside and banging... Same goes for Mutombo when he's in the game... So pretty much I'm saying force Yao to get used to getting the ball EVERYTIME on offense and if they deny him the rock either run some high/low or rotate the ball to the other side where TMac/JJackson or even the PG(Sura/Lue/Barrett)can make something happen...
Sorry wasn't done... I'm not saying trash what JVG is trying to do but we need to realize that we are a slower, less athletic team than last year... Athletes like Francis, Mobley and yes, even Cato are gone... Our only true athletic players/versatile ones are about 3-4 maybe... Ones a rookie, a scoring champ, another coming off a back injury and the last one is pretty much a backup PG... The league is full of running teams and well we just can't compete with running teams very well or even defensive teams... Running a defensive zone will make players have to go inside and face Yao or Mutombo and I like my chances if those two are in the paint in a good position to either make an opponent make a hard shot or even a harder pass... I've been saying this before the season started... This is not a team that is going to win a championshipt this year... We just resigned TMac and hopefully Yao will be here for a long time as well but we will need to add in the offseason good role players and with us losing some players and their salary after the season and a decent pick in the draft, we should be looking good... The problem is....this is not the offseason of 2005 but the beginning of the season for 2004(I think I have the years right)... So the question is what should we do now, not later??? Lets hear some good answers fellas, I know we/they(front office) have to be looking at every option out there...
if we stand pat then the season will be wasted. if the season is already a waste with this current team, we might as well make whatever moves need to be made now and give the new bunch time to gel, rather than making more trades late in the summer and causing another slow start next year.
