Mourning is planning to back to court

And Nets refused him .Shall we do something to sign up him as a backup C/PF ?
He is not expensive and with great playoff experience
think about Spurs' Elliot changed kidney and won a championship
    could this happen again?

This guy should put his Health above all else. i cant believe his making another come back. if he were to remain healthy and not go down again, ZO would be a monster. i would'nt mind taking a risk on him..

Like I said, I would do it. I'd have him play 25 minutes per game for the season, and push him to 35 in the playoffs.

I think he can give us a godo 25 minutes. We'll start him off around 20 minutes, and work him up to around 30 minutes by the end of the season, then push it to 35 in the playoffs.

Can you guys imagine? Once this guy gets into shape, how perfect he would be with Yao?

As long as we have either MoT or Juwan as well, we can limit his minutes comfortably, and would have someone to replace him just in case.

We Can't just send them the TE. We should work with the Celtics:

    Juwan Howard to the Celtics
    Yogi Stewart to the Nets
    Alonzo Mourning to the Rockets

Nets get cap relief, Rockets get Zo, Celtics get Howard a good mentor PF to play for them while Al Jefferson blossoms.

Disregarding whether or not we should acquire Mourning, why do you say that we can't use the TE to acquire Mourning? He made $4.9M last season, so he fits nicely under out TE. So what's the problem?

I agree. Too unreliable. Especially with the size of the contract. I sure as hell wouldn't trade Howard for him.

If Zo was a FA and I could sign him to a vet minimum deal I would look into it, but nothing more.

Not that it wouldn't work, but we should shed some salary to stay at a reasonable level because we still need to add a PG.

So how is a guy that has a life-threatening disease and a couple failed comeback attempts where he never got back to playing as well as he once did more valuable to us than a 17/7 player with a somewhat reasonable contract?

    Please THINK.

You said yourself that MoT and Howard are somewhat redundant.

If it works out and Zo can play, we are no doubt among the top 3 or 4 teams in the league.

If it doesn't, MoT plays most of the PF minutes, with Zo backing him up while he tries and Weatherspoon the rest of the time. Maybe we could even sign someone midway or trade for someone, but I KNOW that the difference between Mo and Howard isn't going to be the difference between me want or not wanting this trade.

However, I would have to be convinced and reasonably assured that Zo is 100% confident in his ability to play a good season.

If it doesn't work out, we're not really screwed the way we would be if we got Kidd. We can easily easily recover, and the damage would be MINMAL.

    Alonzo Mourning Latest News

    Jun. 26, 2004 - 2:14 pm et

Alonzo Mourning, who received a kidney transplant six months ago, is still talking like he is retired.
"I'm not disappointed at all with how things turned out," Mourning said. "Obviously, I wanted to play ball some more, but I think I put my time in. I played over 10 or 11 years, productive years. There's some things I wanted to get accomplished, but that's unfortunate. You've got to move on with your life. There's more to life than athletics."

Alonzo Mourning believes the Nets have gotten the wrong idea about his chances of coming back from kidney-transplant surgery next season. He isn't likely to play.
"Barring a miracle, no, that is not my intention," Mourning said. "My intention right now is to continue to focus on making sure that this new organ that I have in me stays in me. I don't want to go through that procedure again." Jun. 8 - 2:00 pm et

Nets CEO Rod Thorn believes there's a real chance that Alonzo Mourning will attempt a comeback next season.
"Mourning is working and he obviously loves to compete and loves to play and I think he'll do everything he can to get ready. As to whether he can, who knows?" Thorn said. Even though Mourning could return, he's one of the players the Nets plan on leaving available for the expansion draft. Tamar Slay and Kerry Kittles could be the others, with the Nets gambling that the Hornets won't take on Kittles' $10 million salary. May. 22 - 3:12 pm et

    -----------------------------------

All in all, it's a funny change of heart. I can see how the nets aren't happy. I understand them leaving him open on the expansion draft.

I can also see how Zo wants out of NJ.
    ------------------------------------
The TE would work perfectly. Zo has 3 years left on his deal. He'd be a good back up center playing 15 minutes or less. He'd obviously get along with Ewing and Van Gundy, and would be able to teach Yao a bit more of the Georgetown style.

We could make an arrangement with Zo to re-work his deal and verify in writing that if he misses x games due to illness or injury, he'll retire.
    --------------------------------------

Seems like a good plan to me if we can limit the risk, and limit the load required. Good for Zo, good for us.

Actually,New Jersey would owe us a favor. They should give us a pick or something, too.

There is only one way I would agree to take Zo and that is if the Nets would also agree to send us Jason Kidd in another trade.

Absolutely no way I take on Zo with out some benifit to us in return. Remember that Zo has a very high probability of not finishing the season again but I would chance it for a shot at Kidd.

    MoT and Spoon for Kidd

    TE for Zo

Yao / Zo / free agent (Keon Clark or Stephen Hunter)
Howard / Zo / (Clark or Hunter)
J.J. / Boki / free agent? (Darius Miles)
TMac / Free Agent (wesley person or bob sura) / Pike
    Kidd / Lue / Gains

This looks like a pretty damn good line-up to me!

SJC, you say he cannot while reports are that he can and is working towards it.

I'm willing to take the chance. He makes less than 5M, if it doesn't work out, big deal. What I do know is that this guy will make an honest comeback - if he can't, he won't try.

If he doesn't come back, we move on with either JH or MoT at PF, that's fine. However, if we trade for Kidd, and he is not healthy, then we are screwed with his MAXED out contract for 5 years.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The New Jersey Nets presumably will dissuade star center Alonzo Mourning from returning to the team, even though he has been in the gym almost daily for the past two months.

The team would rather see him retire -- thereby allowing it to save $12 million after the last two years of his salary come off the salary cap.

Mourning's agent, Jeff Wechsler, said last night that a comeback from last December's kidney transplant "hasn't come up -- Alonzo made his comments earlier this summer that he has no plans to play, and I'd believe what Alonzo says."

Thorn added, "He's been working out, and there's certainly no doubt that if he can play he would like to play...but it's too early to comment about it."

When asked whether the bean counters would welcome Mourning back, Thorn's response was intentionally vague: "If he's able to play," he said, "I'm sure he'll be here."

I think the Bobcats should do whatever they can to get Mourning, and Granthill, and any other chronically injured player available.

This guy just needs to retire or pull a malone and join a championship team. I don't want the rockets to have to pay him and lose cap space when he might even just leave after half the season.

That'd be miraculous, but I'm still happy just having Yao/T-Mac. That's GM of the year stuff.
