Mourning and Martin nearly come to blows at Nets practice
    November 21, 2003
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey Nets teammates Alonzo Mourning and Kenyon Martin nearly came to blows at practice on Thursday.

According to several published reports, Mourning was last in his group to the finish line at the end of grueling conditioning drills and heard laughter from players.

Mourning approached them and shouted as part of a profanity-filled outburst ``This ain't funny. This is about winning.''

Richard Jefferson, a third-year forward who was laughing, told Mourning that it wasn't funny, it was ``hilarious.''

Martin also mocked Mourning's recent performance on the court and said Mourning wouldn't have to run if he would improve his rebounding. Mourning responded by questioning the leadership and toughness of Martin.

Mourning signed with the Nets after kidney disease cost him all of last season and nearly the entire 2000-01 season. But he took a shot at Martin, who recently missed five games with an ankle injury.

``At least I'm out there on the court, not in the training room. I'm trying to make the best of my time,'' Mourning reportedly told Martin. ``You can't be a leader in the trainer's room crying, `My ankle, my ankle.'''

Martin was said to have responded with a similar remark about Mourning's kidney ailment.

Mourning didn't immediately react, but when players separated into groups for the next part of practice, he suddenly charged toward Martin before being restrained by teammates.

The team got between the two players before they could get close enough for contact. Nets coach Byron Scott, who watched from the far side of the court, went to Martin and spoke calmly to him.

Practice then resumed with Mourning and Martin not speaking to each other. When it ended, team spokesman Gary Sussman said neither player would be available for comment.

Team president Rod Thorn said the Nets spent the afternoon serving a holiday dinner at a community center and there was no lingering tension between any of the players.

Martin should be traded! He's a cancer who doesn't respect his teammate!

wow, what an ass, but then again, what did Moruning expect from those young group of guys. From the games I have watched, Mourning doesnt look like he has happy in NJ, bet he is thinking how he would look in a Mavs jersey by now.

Seeing as what Mourning has been through you would think these players would respect that. The guy is busting his ass. I am sure he did not want to come back and play and have his teammates put a knife in his back.

My respect for Jefferson and Martin is WAY down.

I wish MoT would have kicked Martin's butt last season. Martin is all bark no bite, where as Mourning has plenty of bite which JVG can attest to. Martin needs to get to the all-star game a couple of times before he starts dogging mourning. K-Mart is such a wuss.

i think it is disrespectfull, to say things like that against mourning. That mourning came back after his operation shows he has heart. ofcourse he isn't as good as he was. i think Martin should keep his big mouth to himself or against oponents. Mourning was/is a intense player. Martin isn't half the player mourning is/was

Here's a guy who wanted the max $$ than he's worth and being disrespectful toward a veteran warrior who wants to win. Who does Martin think he is?

I dont know if I'd go that far, K-Mart of my favorite players because he dishes it but he takes it as well. He dosent flop around like Malone and Divac. Plus he nearly took Malone's head off a few years ago.

I have never liked Martin. The only thing his good at is dunking and catching the ball from a pass from Kidd. Other then that he is very very sorry. He has an ugly-butt looking shoot, and he cain't shoot for sh.....

What a loser...I wish they would trade him for Rasheed Wallace already...Mourning doesn't fit in there, he barely gets to play and when he does, he gets the ball with the shot clock running down or he gets it at the top of the key where he has to pass and can't do much. I wish he would have gone to the Spurs. He would have fit in better there. Those players that were laughing at ZO should be ashamed, laughing at someone with a life-threatening condition.

Wow. Am I the only one that sees Mourning being the @$$ here?

    Let's review:

His teammates were ribbing Mourning a little and instead of responding with something like "haha very funny", he gets pissed and starts cussing and getting personal.

They respond by getting personal back and things get ugly.

Things apparently cool down; only Mourning physically goes after Martin after the initial incident was already over.

It looks like both parties were acting immature, but it sounds like Mourning was the one being the baby to me.

    1) Players mocking Mourning for not putting out. Jefferson & Martin in the wrong.
    2) Mourning spouting back questioning Martin's desire. Mourning in the wrong.
    3) Martin mocking Mourning because of a possible life threatening disease - Completely INEXCUSABLE and TOTALLY wrong. All bets are off after this classless act.

If you think Mourning was more in the wrong here, then I am glad I am not your teammate.

Zo, Kenyon put fight in Nets
Fri Nov 21, 7:08 AM ET

    By JULIAN GARCIA
    DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Byron Scott wanted to put the Nets through a grueling practice yesterday. The coach has not been happy with the intensity his team has displayed in its 5-6 start, so he told his players he wanted to see them "go at each other."

Apparently, the Nets took Scott's message literally.

Alonzo Mourning had to be restrained by teammates after the veteran center went after Kenyon Martin, who taunted him for finishing last in wind sprints.

Just after Scott opened the gym doors to allow reporters in to watch the final few minutes of practice, the Nets started conditioning drills so difficult they are referred to as "suicides." After one group of players, which included Martin and Richard Jefferson, was finished, Mourning's group went.

Mourning, who is 33 and suffers from a kidney ailment that may eventually require a transplant, was obviously struggling and was the last player in his group to cross the finish line. As he walked gingerly toward some chairs, Mourning noticed Martin laughing at him. Jefferson, who was seated nearby, was laughing too.

Mourning, who apparently was bothered more by Martin's laughter, glared at Martin and said, "Don't laugh, b****." :D

Next, Martin apparently told Mourning that the team wouldn't have been running suicides if he had pulled down more than one rebound in the Nets' 88-85 loss to Charlotte on Tuesday. Mourning responded by telling Martin, who missed five games earlier this season due to an ankle injury, to worry about staying on the court and out of the trainer's room.

That's when Martin, who was smirking during most of the exchange, delivered what could be considered a low blow, saying something to Mourning about his kidney problem.

Martin and Mourning then continued the verbal jabs for several minutes. But just before the Nets were to start scrimmaging, Mourning rushed toward Martin and yelled, "You wanna talk about my kidney? I'll lay you out."

This is not the first time Martin has taunted Mourning. During a game at the Meadowlands on March 15, 2002, Mourning, then with the Heat, got into a shoving match with Aaron Williams. Martin intervened, and when Mourning pointed at him, Martin slapped Mourning's arm down. When Mourning flinched, Martin just laughed.

That, and both players' intensity, raised concern about whether Mourning and Martin could coexist when Mourning signed with the Nets over the summer. Neither player was available after practice, but no one else with the Nets seemed concerned that the altercation could become a bigger issue.

"I think from time to time you have altercations in practice," said team president Rod Thorn, who said Martin and Mourning got along fine during a Thanksgiving charity event after practice. "When you're playing hard, these types of things will happen."

"I'm not upset about it," said Scott, who said he will not discipline either player. "You're talking about two warriors. When it's all said and done, they both understand they have to go to war together."

Mourning is averaging 7.4 points and just 2.3 rebounds in 11 games. In six games, Martin is averaging 17.2 points and 9.7 rebounds. The Nets have been outrebounded in nine of 11 games, including 50-38 against the Hornets Tuesday.

Thorn said it is more important for the Nets to improve those numbers than to get along.

"I think it's obvious why we're off to the kind of start we are," Thorn said. "We're one of the worst rebounding teams in the league and our defense hasn't been anything like it was the last two years. If we don't improve in those areas, we won't be successful." Martin has no game. He is a slightly better version of Bill Laimbeer.

    WOW. Genius take there.

I wish Mourning would have beat up Jefferson. Can you imagine that guy talking crap with his voice. I actually like Martin a little, but can't stand Jefferson. He's a straight b****.
