Mounting the EZ Tag sticker on my windshield...

I'm pretty sure those cameras will read it anywhere on the windshield. I keep mine right behind the rear view mirror. From what I've seen, most people do the same. If you followed the legal limit for tinting your windshield, that area behind the rear view mirror should be below the tint.

I use a different system on the east coast, but it's still the same type of technology.. I put mine under the tint above the rearview mirror... it's great, cause you can barely see it inside, and you can't see it at all from the outside. Never had a problem.

To make sure before I did it, I just held it up in that position once while going through to see if it read it while it was there.. (before mounting it for real)

 

Is there a way to mount those without attaching to windshield? So maybe I can switch from one car to another.

 

It shouldn't be a problem. The EZ tag (and other systems like it) is an RFID chip, and when you drive under the EZ tag poll booth, an RFID reader scans the tag and notes that you drove through. As such, it doesn't have to be able to "see" your tag, but it does need to have some level of line of sight, so that the signal is not blocked. For instance, you probably wouldn't be able to keep it in your glove compartment, because there is too much metal, etc. surrounding it to actually get a signal from the reader to the tag and then back from the tag to the reader.

Here in Chicago, they give you those 3M velcro-like strips to attach the toll tag to your windshield. That way, you can interchange it between cars, etc. As long as you are holding it up to the glass when you drive by, you should be okay. When I lived in Houston, I didn't want to mount the EZ tag in my windshield, so I just held it up whenever I'd pass through. Once, I saw this girl in a jeep (with the top down) just hold her tag up in the air.

Last time I saw an EZ tag, I saw that they'd really slimmed it down -- the one my folks' had was about as thick as a folded-up piece of paper. That might be a bit more difficult to hold up and what not, but it should still work. The toll tags here in Chicago are ENORMOUS. They're larger than any of the EZ tags I ever had in Houston. They look so "un-technological" that they look like they're from the 80s or something. But that does make them really easy to hold.
