By the way, Baby Benadryl doesn't always work either.

For some kids it has the opposite effect -- it induces hyperactivity. (It's recommended that you try it on your kid before you fly to be sure they don't have this reaction.)

In fact, I recently flew round-trip with my 2-year-old, and all it did was mellow her out a bit. She only slept 3.5 hours on a 6 hour red-eye flight.

(I'd tell the rest of the story, but I'm sure I'd be accused of being a bad parent by a bunch of single 20-year-olds. )

Sad thing is unless this is a court case you will never hear the other side. No one want to hear the story of the angry, homely, woman saying terrible things to the flight attendant. Flight attendant punching crying baby in face is much better news.

I noticed that, but it is the only material we've got. Take it with a grain of salt. But, the clincher for me would be that people sitting next to the mother and toddler took up for her. That says a lot.

To echo the sentiments of defensive fath... err, some posters, people are assuming things we don't know about. We don't know the kid was yelling; we don't know the mother encouraged him; we don't know that the mother didn't discourage him; we don't know that the kid didn't have any toys or DVDs.

Totally agree with you there. I've forgotten to bring milk or snacks for my toddler a couple times, and I haven't made that mistake since. It was totally my fault.

However, I refer again to the longer version of the article about this incident (see below).

The woman had an 11 hour delay! Do you know how much stuff you'd have to bring to occupy a toddler for 11 hours plus a plane ride? About 3 suitcases full...

    http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=local&id=5472927

Passenger Kate Penland recalled, "He was saying, 'Bye-bye, plane.'"

That's how Penland's son Garron said goodbye to a more than 11 hour delay at the Houston airport. It happened last month on board a Continental ExpressJet plane while it taxied.

Do you remember being 19 months old? My son is currently 21 months old. I we do a lot to teach him what's appropriate as far as yelling and such. But if he's talking at a normal level, not saying anything bad, and no one around me is complaining, why the hell would I do anything to stop him? You can occupy him with whatever you want. He's going to talk if he wants to. All I can do is try to keep it at a normal level. I don't take him to the movies for that reason. We don't go to restaurants other than ones where kids are welcome.

Then I think you are doing a great job Leroy. I wish more parents acted like you.

I remember a year ago I was at the mall. In the shoe section of banana republic they have this leather bench you sit on to try on shoes. This 2 year old girl, maybe three, kept climbing on it and jumping off while the dad watched and did nothing. Over and over she did this. He didn't encourage her but he didn't ask her to behave. Those are the parents who make me sick. You on the other hand seem to have you game on point when it comes to raising kids. I salute you Leroy. You area real man of child care.

I heard on the news or something (i dont remmember where), but it interviews a couple other passengers and they said everything thing the mother said was true, and it was the flight attendants fault

You obviously don't have kids if you think that you can treat a toddler like an older child, much less an adult. Maybe if this kid was a little older you might have a case. Most toddler's can't talk, they say a few words or maybe phrases. You don't converse with them.

They don't understand "sit quietly and read a book" or "we need to be good on the plane". At best, they understand "Yes" or "No", but they have no concept of "why".

Try explaining to a toddler why it's okay to throw a plastic ball, but it's not okay to throw daddy's cell phone. Good luck with that.

Man I bet you are one of those parents that let your kids destroy your friends houses.

What happens next is the kid falls, hits themselves on a glass shelve and then the parents sue the store.

this clinches it for me, too. what we've heard so far makes it sound like the flight attendant seriously overreacted.

and where does it say the mother didn't bring anything to occupy the child's time??? i keep hearing that said here. where is that coming from? the fact that the child said, "bye, bye plane" over and over again doesn't mean the mother didn't bring something for him to play with.

this whole thing is utterly ridiculous.
