What is the one CD that you own that you feel is underrated??

This goes for all genres...whether rock, pop, jazz, techno/electronica, new age, country, etc.

I'd classify underrated as the following:

    1) A CD that was bought without any expectation of being really good yet turned out to be a definite keeper

    2) A CD that may not be considered a good CD by the "music experts"

Believe it or not, my choice goes to "Mechanical Animals" by Marilyn Manson. There was a time (up to a month ago) where Manson would have been the last artist that I would have ever bought a CD of, but being a NIN fan, I was always curious to hear what one of his CDs sounded like.

I picked "Mechanical Animals" because I had heard it was a combination of hard rock with some techno. There is also a generous helping of melody.

I like all the tracks but especially "I Don't Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me)". I would highly recommend it to people who like hard rock and also a beat that you can dance to ala techno/electronica.

I definitely plan on getting more of his stuff.

So, which CD that you own do you feel is underrated?

Gov't Mule - The Deep End vol. 1

I suppose it never made it BIG, but the reviews I'd read were good. Unfortunately, most people haven't heard it, or of it. Yet it remains the as one of the very best CD purchases I made last year

But I bought it on a whim. I only purchased it because it was on the ATO label, and I figured "well, if Dave Matthews says it's good, I'll give it a shot". And so I bought it before a drive to San Antonio. Now, I have a hard time going 2 weeks without listening to it a few times.

Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American (also their umpteenth self-titled album). I really had no idea what to expect when I bought it, and just hoped for the best. It's definately a keeper - lyrically and acoustically balanced and varied, and one of the better CDs I have.

Celtic Twilight - hearts of space

This Irish lady mesmerizes my mind with these fantastic mystical melodies, and they usually help me ease into a deep, sound sleep. It's the most beautiful thing i've ever heard. I truly love her.

    Manic Moonlight...King's X

Tapehead was a horrible CD and Welcome home Mr. Bulbus was good but not great so when Moonlight came out i really did not have great expectations. personally, i feel if they had had a legitamate producer on this record like Brenden O' Brein like on Dogman...this could have been possibly their finest album.

the song's are awesome, the music is awesome it really rocks...my only complaint is that it is obviously a Ty Tabor produced project and like most things he produces........he sucks the life out of it. it has a very monotone feel to it and lacks spontonatity a bit. don't take that too harshly.....this is one fine record........imho, highly underated.

TapeHead might be my favorite King's X album! I haven't listened to Manic Moonlight much at all...was a little disappointed by Bulbous as well. I mean they're King's X albums, which automatically makes them great, but I just haven't liked their last two records as much as the previous three. I guess that's the great thing about King's X -- they're so versatile that every fan you ask may have a different favorite album.

Have you heard the Ty Tabor and Doug Pinnick (Poundhound) solo stuff? Doug also made an album with another guy under the name 'Supershine' that I wouldn't mind checking out.

being in malaysia, any album not in the britney spears, metallica, bon jovi, morisette level is an unknown.
heck i'm the only guy in my circle of friends to own dave mathews band. its that bad. not only that, any teeny bopper, boyband, cheesy techno group that come in can expect decent fan base. (a whole bunch of manny ramirez before he found out what was it, beck, chemical brothers?)
if you thought westlife or aqua was bad, then you haven't heard lolly, a1, ateens, gil, and a whole bunch of other ****.
i rely heavily on internet reviews.
i'd have to say blues traveler, hook.

i like bands like dave mathews band, counting crows, blues traveler, natalie merchant, 10000 maniacs, ryan adams, alanis' jagged little pill, sarah mclachlan.
if anybody wants to recommend any other album in this genre or even offer websites with solid reviews?

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy is one of the greatest CDs by a solo woman, IMO. I would highly look into buying it...you won't regret it.

Your taste in music rocks fbA34!

    Check out:

    Agents of Good Roots
    Guster
    Gov't Mule
    Devon
    Grateful Dead
    Allman Brothers Band
Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals
    Bela Fleck and the Flecktones

Agents is the closest to DMB in the bunch -- unfortunately they're no longer together, but the music still kicks ass. "Straightaround" is a must-own!

That's another CD that I didn't know what to expect, never heard anything of, but just bought on a whim . . . it's AWESOME.

    Kissproof World by Jane Wiedlin

Sure, my Go Go vision may cloud judgement on said topic, but personal opinions removed, there are few albums that carry the emotional and lyrical power like KPW. :)

for whatever reason, I find myself drawn to albums that were follow-ups to megasmash hits when I think about which albums are underrated.

    here are a few:

alanis morrissette -- supposed former infatuation junkie
    weezer -- pinkerton
ben folds five -- unauthorized biography of reinhold messner
rem -- up [not a follow-up to a megasmash hit but underrated in my opinion]
counting crows -- recovering the satellites
ben harper -- fight for your mind [I know a lot of people like it, but it's still underrated in my opinion; this record should be on every best of list known to man]
